An electrochemical sensor incorporates a ferrocenophane which is a compound with at least one bridging group covalently attached to and connecting the two cyclopentadiene rings associated with the same iron atom. This bridging group maybe tetramethylene. As compared to an equivalent sensor with ferrocene, the tolerance of elevated temperature is improved and so is the working life at ambient temperature.

Electrochemical sensors

A viscosified aqueous solution, optionally for use in a subterranean wellbore, is made by reacting in aqueous solution (i) an initial polymer with either carboxylic acid or amino groups on its polymer chain, (ii) a second compound with an amino group or carboxylic acid group, and (iii) a coupling agent, so that molecules of the second compound join to the polymer chain through amide groups, thereby forming an aqueous solution of a modified polymer which, without separation from the aqueous solution, participates in cross-linking thereby enhancing viscosity of the solution. The second compound may include hydrophobic groups so that the modified polymer contains hydrophobic groups and is able to cross-link with itself or a viscoelastic surfactant through association of hydrophobic groups (without covalent bond formation) in aqueous solution. Such cross-links can reform after the fluid has been subjected to shear.

Viscosification of aqueous solutions

A system can include a housing that defines an interior space; a shaft disposed at least in part in the interior space of the housing where the shaft includes a longitudinal axis, a curved surface and an end surface; a submersible electric motor operatively coupled to the shaft where the submersible electric motor includes a cable connector; two proximity sensors where each of the proximity sensors includes a sensor aperture disposed in the interior space of the housing; and circuitry operatively coupled to the proximity sensors that determines position values of the shaft with respect to time based at least in part on output of the proximity sensors.

A method can include receiving sensor information from at least one sensor disposed in a downhole environment that includes an electric submersible pump operatively coupled to a power drive via a cable; receiving electrical information associated with transmission of power via the cable; and identifying a state of the electric submersible pump via an adaptive model of at least the cable and the electric submersible pump based at least in part on a portion of the sensor information and a portion of the electrical information.

Submersible electrical system assessment

Aqueous liquid which has been in contact with a subterranean geological formation, especially a hydrocarbon reservoir, is examined in order to detect or measure viscosifying polymer therein, by flowing a sample of the liquid through a constriction thereby causing extensional flow and alignment of any polymer molecules with the flow, and examining the solution for birefringence of aligned polymer molecules. The amount of birefringence is determined from intensity of light which has passed through the solution relative to intensity of the light source.

Devices and methods for measuring analyte concentration

An electrochemical fluid sensor for a downhole production tool positionable in a wellbore penetrating a subterranean is provided. The wellbore has a downhole fluid therein. The electrochemical fluid sensor includes a sensor housing positionable in the downhole tool, a sensing solution positionable in the housing (the sensing solution including a mediator reactive to target chemicals), a gas permeable membrane to fluidly isolate the downhole fluid from the sensing solution (the gas permeable membrane permitting the passage of gas to the sensing solution), and a plurality of electrodes positioned about the housing a distance from the gas permeable membrane to measure reaction by the sensing solution whereby downhole parameters may be determined.

Downhole electrochemical fluid sensor and method of using same

Monitoring one or more items of equipment associated with a borehole or other conduit. A sensor system includes a vibration sensor for sensing vibrations at one or more sensor locations associated with one or more items of the equipment and/or the borehole or other conduit. A processing system processes the sensor information to determine a characteristic of the operation of the one or more items of equipment and/or the borehole or other conduit.

Monitoring of equipment associated with a borehole/conduit

A measurement apparatus for non-invasively logging the flow of perforations in a well casing lining a wellbore. The measurement apparatus includes a plurality of transducers arranged adjacent an outer surface of the measurement apparatus and at predefined azimuthal angular positions with respect to a longitudinal axis of the measurement apparatus, where the transducers are adapted to transmit and detect an acoustic pulse, and where each transducer is arranged at a different azimuthal angle with respect to each of the remaining transducers.

Logging perforation flow in wellbore

The present invention, in one set of embodiments, provides methods and systems for integrating conducting diamond electrodes into a high power acoustic resonator. More specifically, but not by way of limitation, in certain embodiments of the present invention, diamond electrodes may be integrated into a high power acoustic resonator to provide a robust sensing device that may provide for acoustic cleaning of the electrodes and increasing the rate of mass transport to the diamond electrodes. The diamond electrodes may be used as working, reference or counter electrodes or a combination of two or more of such electrodes. In certain aspects, the high power acoustic resonator may include an acoustic horn for focusing acoustic energy and the diamond electrodes may be coupled with the acoustic horn.

Disclosed herein are devices and methods for the detection, quantification and/or monitoring of analytes. The systems and methods can be used, for example, to rapidly monitor gases downhole in a well.

An electrochemical sensor of a downhole tool positionable in a wellbore penetrating a subterranean formation is provided. The downhole tool has a flowline to receive downhole fluid. The electrochemical sensor includes a bulkhead carried by the downhole tool, a membrane exposed to the downhole fluid in the flowline, and an electrochemical cell supported by the bulkhead about the membrane. The electrochemical cell includes a plurality of cell sensors, at least one cell electrode, and a sensing solution. The plurality cell sensors include an analyte sensor, a temperature sensor, and a pH sensor. The sensing solution is reactive to certain analytes in the downhole fluid to generate electrical signals measurable by the plurality of cell sensors whereby parameters of chemicals in the downhole fluid may be measured.

Downhole electrochemical sensor and method of using same

A method of measuring pH of aqueous liquid with little or no buffer present uses an electrochemical pH sensor which comprises a plurality of electrodes with a redox active organic compound attached to an electrode and having at least one functional group convertible electrochemically between reduced and oxidized forms with transfer of at least one proton between the compound and surrounding aqueous phase, wherein the compound has at least one substituent group which promotes hydrogen bonding at a said functional group and thereby increases the reaction rate of proton transfer. The substituent group may form an internal hydrogen bond with a redox-convertible group or may enhance polarity to promote electrostatic interaction with water molecules and reduce activation energy. Such an electrochemical sensor may be used for pH measurement in computer controlled equipment for processing an aqueous liquid.

Electrochemical pH measurement

This invention relates to methods and apparatus for determination of ion concentrations, particularly in downhole water from hydrocarbon wells, aquifers etc. It is useful in a wide range of applications, including predicting the formation of scale and fingerprinting waters from different sources. More particularly, the invention relates to the use of ligands whose electronic configuration is altered by the binding of the scaling ions within a water sample. These alterations are detected electrochemically by applying varying potential to electrodes and measuring current flow as potential is varied, from which is derived the concentration of scaling ions in the fluid.

Apparatus and method for measuring concentrations of scale-forming ions

The present invention provides an electrochemical sensor having a solid electrically conductive substrate and a compound immobilized thereon which has binding affinity for an analyte species to be detected and also displays electrochemical behavior which is modified upon binding of that analyte species, so that binding of an analyte species can be detected by measuring electrochemical properties, such as by voltammetry. Desirably the immobilized compound contains both a first moiety with binding affinity for the analyte and a separate second moiety which is a redox system whose electrochemical oxidation/reduction properties become modified when the first moiety binds the analyte. The analyte binding moiety may be a diol or polyol and preferably is a sugar. The electrochemical sensor finds use in methods of analyzing reservoir and process fluids, particularly at a subterranean location. The electrochemical sensor may be a component of a downhole tool, adapted for deployment downhole.
