A valve for use in a pneumatic system of a truck-trailer having a source of air under pressure, a reservoir, at least one spring brake unit and a brake service line is provided. The valve includes a housing, a pressure protection valve portion, a spring brake actuation valve portion and an anti-compounding valve portion. The housing has a supply passage in communication with the source of air under pressure. The pressure protection valve portion is disposed within a first chamber of the housing. The first chamber has an inlet in communication with the supply passage and an outlet in communication with the reservoir. The pressure protection valve portion is configured to selectively block the flow of pressurized air from the supply passage to the reservoir through the first chamber. The spring brake actuation valve portion is disposed within a second chamber of the housing.

Trailer spring brake valve

A configurable control valve for use with air brake systems is provided. This control valve includes: a first or top body portion, a second or bottom body portion, and a connector for attaching the first body portion to the second body portion. The first body portion may include an actuator or handle having either a linear translation a rotational translation, and the second body portion may include either horizontal or vertical port configurations. The connector cooperates with the first body portion and the second body portion to provide complete 360&#xb0; lateral rotation of the body portions relative to one another.

Control valve

A cover for a vehicle parking brake control valve button including an elastomeric body and a plurality of elastic ridges. The body of the cover includes a rim and a recess designed to fit the contour of the control valve button. The ridges are designed to provide enough rigidity to support pressure applied thereto, and enough elasticity to absorb energy created by the actuation of the button. The absorption of the energy dampens the stinging sensation typically felt by the operator when actuating the parking brakes.

A combined spring brake modulating relay valve integrates the functions of a relay valve and a modulating valve. The housing includes a valve assembly movable in response to air pressure provided to selected ports in the housing. A relay piston selectively communicates with a control port and a primary brake circuit port. A modulating piston includes surfaces selectively pressurized by the primary brake circuit port and a secondary brake circuit port. This modulates the pressure from the delivery port to thereby selectively apply the associated spring brakes if a failure is detected at the primary brake circuit port. The exhaust member selectively controls communication between the supply and delivery ports as necessary.

A braking system control requires that a first or service braking system be actuated before a second or parking braking system can be released to prevent unexpected movements. A sensor senses that the service brakes are engaged and controls a device to release the parking brakes. A latch ensures that the parking brakes remain released. For example, a piston and check valve form the sensor and latch. Service brake pressure works against the piston. Above a threshold level, service brake pressure drives the piston to open a valve that provides pressurized air to a parking brake release system. Once released, the check valve directs parking brake release pressure to the piston to keep the valve open.

A double check valve is integrally located in a spring brake chamber to reduce plumbing associated with a pneumatic brake system. Anti-compounding is provided by virtue of a bias pressure of approximately twenty to thirty psi between a pressure chamber of a service actuator and an operating chamber of a parking/emergency actuator. Likewise, vehicle roll-back is addressed since the transition from a service application to a park application assures that the service brakes are sufficiently applied until the spring brake becomes operative.

A braking system is able to meet emergency stopping distance requirements associated with a failed rear axle service control line by modifying the service relay valve. The service relay valve incorporates a biased double check valve so that an additional or secondary control line from the foot control valve communicates with the service port of the relay valve. If the primary circuit is operational, a biasing force imposed on the double check valve permits normal operation via the primary service line. On the other hand, if the primary service line is lost, the biasing force is overcome and communication between the secondary service line and the service port of the relay valve is established.

A fluid pressure responsive valve includes a valve member mounted on a guide pin slidably carried by a piston. A valve guide is engaged by one side of the valve element, and the piston engages the opposite side. The piston controls the valve member. The valve guide acts as a stop for a check valve element that controls communication through the inlet port, and also guides and supports the spring controlling the check valve element.

A proportioning control valve for a fluid pressure braking system for a tractor-trailer combination vehicle permits unproportioned communication of control pressure when the tractor is pulling a trailer but proportions communication of control pressure when the tractor is operated without a trailer to establish a proportionally lower pressure level at the outlet of the valve. When the pressure level at the control port exceeds a predetermined level established by a spring, the control valve proportions at a rate which increases the pressure level at the outlet at a rate greater than the rate of increase of control pressure until the unproportioned pressure level is attained.

A proportioning control valve for a fluid pressure braking system for a tractor-trailer combination vehicle permits unproportioned communication of control pressure when the tractor is pulling a trailer but proportions communication of control pressure when the tractor is operated without a trailer to establish a proportonally lower pressure level at the outlet of the valve. The control valve, when operating in the proportioning mode, is also responsive to pressure in the brake reservoir. When pressure in the reservoir drops below a predetermined level, the control valve proportions at a rate which increases the pressure level at the outlet at a rate greater than the rate of increase of control pressure until the unproportioned pressure level is attained.

The open bore of a disc brake caliper assembly is protected by a resilient boot and retainer assembly (92). The piston (38) which forces the friction elements (26, 32) against the friction faces (14, 16) of the rotor (12) is provided with a circumferentially extending groove (118) which receives the bead (96) circumscribing one end of the boot (94). The bead (98) circumscribing the other end of the boot (94) is clamped against a land (122) of the piston 38 by a boot retainer (110). The boot retainer (110) is provided with a radially projecting portion (112) which is held against a circumferentially extending face (108) on the wall of the caliper housing (22) by the oil seal (116). Accordingly, the boot (94) may be removed and a new one installed when the brake is serviced without disassembly of the caliper assembly by withdrawing the piston (38) until the groove (118) is brought into registry with the projection (106), thereby permitting removal of the old boot and installation of a new one.
