A redundant mechanical control system incorporates a jam override subsystem to enable a breakout or break-away feature of the redundant mechanical control system. The jam override subsystem includes a spring and detent system to apply an axial force to a portion of an interconnect. The interconnect mechanically links a first portion of the redundant mechanical control system with a second portion. When a failure occurs, rendering inoperable the first portion or the second portion of the redundant mechanical control system, the axial force of the spring and detent system is overridden by a compression or extension force of the operable portion of the redundant mechanical control system.

Spring detent for over-ridable interconnect

A hydro-mechanical device for providing tactile feel curve shaping, including: a housing; a fluid displacing element; and, a preloaded flow regulating assembly operatively connected to the housing. The housing has a working fluid chamber formed therein, the working fluid chamber containing working fluid. The fluid displacing element is positioned within the working fluid chamber. The fluid displacing element divides the working fluid chamber into at least two cavities upon which fluid is transferred upon movement of the fluid displacing element. The flow of the working fluid is controlled through the preloaded flow regulating assembly in accordance with a custom force profile combining a controlled velocity dependent force component and a controlled resisting force component which opposes an applied force at a controlled maximum threshold.

A smaller sized flip dot display utilizes a magnetically actuated pixel that rotates between two orientations. The orientations display two different optical states. A simulated dot matrix design improves the aesthetics and consumer appeal, and also permits a flip dot display capable of producing a positive contrast display image with darker colored 'ON' pixels contrasting with brighter background and 'OFF' pixels by reducing the visibility of the spacing gap between each rotating pixel and the surrounding background. An interwoven configuration of magnetic actuators with a coil around each arm of a U-shaped core may result in lower power consumption, low production cost, and small size required for use in consumer and small mobile devices such as watches and mobile phones.

Magnetic display for watches

An integrated load sensing system includes a housing including a coupling pin portion thereof. A bridge circuit includes a set of strain gauges bonded to the coupling pin portion. A bridge circuit excitation, error correction, and amplification (BCEECA) subsystem is operatively connected to the bridge circuit for receiving indications of shear load from the strain gauges, correcting signal error, and amplifying the indications of shear load. The BCEECA subsystem provides amplified output signals. A power conditioning module is operatively connected to the BCEECA subsystem for receiving power from an external power supply and conditioning power to an appropriate state for driving the bridge circuit as well as an appropriate state for error correction and amplification circuitry within the BCEECA subsystem. A logic module compares the amplified output signals to a predetermined signal threshold and provides latching of enunciation in accordance with a selected delay after the threshold is surpassed. An enunciation element providing enunciation of the output signals surpassing the signal threshold in accordance with the logic module. The bridge circuit, the BCEECA subsystem, the power conditioning module, the logic module, and the enunciation element are contained and sealed within the housing. The invention includes a method for in situ testing of a shear load sensing system for a mechanical system.

Integrated load sensing system

The system contains a first planar permanent magnet having a first direction of magnetization and a first opening formed therein. A second planar permanent magnet has a second direction of magnetization and a second opening formed therein. The second opening is axially aligned with the first opening. The direction of magnetization of the first planar permanent magnet opposes the direction of magnetization of the second planar permanent magnet. A plurality of stationary coils are provided, wherein at least one of the stationary coils is located within the first opening and at least one of the stationary coils is located within the second opening. A pair of extension members traverses the first opening and the second opening. A magnetizable slug is integral with each of the extension members.

Flexible electromagnetic valve actuator modeling and performance

A linear actuating device contains a top magnet and a bottom magnet. The bottom magnet is axially aligned with the top magnet. The top magnet and the bottom magnet have opposing magnetization. A washer is sandwiched between the top magnet and the bottom magnet. A top coil is positioned within the top magnet. A bottom coil is positioned within the bottom magnet. A slug is slidably positioned within the top coil and bottom coil. An actuating member is integral with the slug.

Method and system for a linear actuator with stationary vertical magnets and coils

A system and method for a multiple degrees of freedom motor includes an output shaft. A stator is provided having at least a first lamination stack. Each lamination stack has an interior curved surface. The lamination stacks are disposed adjacent the output shaft. A rotor is fixed to the output shaft and movably supported adjacent the stator with an air gap disposed between the rotor and the stator. The rotor includes at least one magnet disposed thereon. The magnet is movable along the interior curved surface of the lamination stacks in directions defining at least a first degree of freedom. The rotor is biased toward a base position along at least one degree of freedom.

Reluctance laminations for a motor assembly

A reliable and cost-efficient direct drive force feedback motor is suitable for joystick applications, allowing multiple degrees of output freedom, requiring no coil commutation, and permitting compact packaging. A multiple degree-of-freedom motor consistent with the invention comprises an output shaft, a stator, and a rotor. The stator comprises first and second lamination stacks, each lamination stack having an interior curved surface and a coil wound thereon, the lamination stacks being disposed adjacent the output shaft. The rotor is fixed to the output shaft and movably supported adjacent the stator with an air gap disposed between the rotor and the stator, the rotor including at least one magnet disposed thereon and being movable along the interior curved surface of the lamination stacks in directions defining at least first and second degrees of freedom. Energization of the coil of the first lamination stack establishes a first magnetic field to urge the output shaft to rotate in a first plane, and energization of the coil of the second lamination stack establishes a second magnetic field to urge the output shaft to rotate in a second plane substantially orthogonal to the first plane.

Direct drive controller with haptic feedback

At least one set of two magnets is provided, at least one of the magnets having an outer magnet portion, a middle magnet portion, and an inner magnet portion. The outer magnet portion has a magnetization pointing in an at least partially axial direction. The middle magnet portion has a magnetization substantially perpendicular to the magnetization of the outer magnet portion. The inner magnet portion has a magnetization directed substantially anti-parallel to the magnetization of the outer magnet portion. The apparatus also includes at least one electrically conductive coil positioned at least partially between the set of two magnets. At least one substantially magnetically permeable object is positioned at least partially between the set of two magnets. A rod is integral with the substantially magnetically permeable object.

High intensity radial field magnetic actuator

At least one set of two nested magnetic arrays is provided, each nested magnetic array having an outer magnet, a middle magnet, and an inner magnet. The outer magnet has a magnetization pointing in an at least partially axial direction. The middle magnet has a magnetization substantially perpendicular to the magnetization of the outer magnet. The inner magnet has a magnetization directed substantially anti-parallel to the magnetization of the outer magnet. The apparatus also includes at least one electrically conductive coil positioned at least partially between the two nested magnetic arrays. At least one substantially magnetically permeable object is positioned at least partially between the two nested magnetic arrays. A rod is integral with the substantially magnetically permeable object.

High intensity radial field magnetic array and actuator

A miniature actuator, e.g., for use in a Micro Air Vehicle, comprises at least one nested array of magnets, with an outer annular magnet with a magnetization pointing in an axial direction, a middle annular magnet with a radial magnetization, and an inner cylindrical magnet with a magnetization directed anti-parallel to the magnetization of the outer annular magnet. In one embodiment, a permanent magnet actuator comprises such an array, and a conductive coil having a current distributed over the volume of the conductive coil, wherein the magnetic field of the array is perpendicular to the current located in the coil. The coil may be located above or below the first magnetic array. In another embodiment, a conductive coil is disposed between two magnetic arrays. The coil may have a winding that is pancake-shaped, solenoidal, or toroidal and may comprise more than one winding. The magnetic arrays may be canted to permit the toroidal winding to expand, affording control over the spread of the magnetic field in the gap.
