An engine system for a vehicle includes an internal combustion engine having an exhaust gas outlet, an exhaust system having a three-way catalyst and a switch-type post oxygen sensor, and an engine control module that controls the engine system. The engine control module includes a first control logic for estimating a three-way catalyst oxygen storage capacity based on a plurality of measured inputs, a second control logic for estimating aging effects of the switch-type post oxygen sensor, and a third control logic that calculates a filtered estimated three-way catalyst oxygen storage capacity for the three-way catalyst.

Method of estimating oxygen storage capacity of catalyst

A method of estimating the oxygen storage capacity of a catalyst includes providing an engine system having an internal combustion engine and an exhaust system having a catalyst and an oxygen sensor, providing a three-way catalyst observer model having a Kalman filter and a three-way catalyst kinetic model, estimating a three-way catalyst next time step state and a modeling error, linearizing the three-way catalyst observer model, filtering the estimated three-way catalyst next time step state, and calculating a covariance.

A method for controlling an internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinders including a first cylinder and one or more remaining cylinders includes selecting a desired auto-ignition dwell for a first combustion cycle for the first cylinder of the plurality of cylinders. A first fuel mass is provided to the first cylinder which is combusted during the first combustion cycle. An actual auto-ignition dwell for the first combustion cycle which results from the first fuel mass is determined and a dwell error is calculated. The dwell error is used to determine a second fuel mass which provided to the first cylinder and which is combusted during the second combustion cycle.

Internal combustion engine control method

A system for controlling the combustion behavior of an engine is provided. The engine is equipped with a plurality of control subsystems that influence combustion in the engine. The system includes a controller configured to receive a plurality of inputs, to determine a desired subsystem states to operate the engine, and to determine a target value for each of a plurality of control parameters, wherein the target values for one or more control parameters depends on the values of the plurality of inputs. The controller is further configured to communicate the target values of control parameters to the control subsystems.

Supervisory control of a compression ignition engine

A GDCI engine control system determines if in-cylinder conditions are sufficient to achieve combustion in a given cylinder or if a misfire is likely. Fuel is delivered to that cylinder if combustion is probable, but fuel is disabled to that cylinder if a misfire is probable.

GDCI cold start misfire prevention

A system is disclosed comprising an engine having coolant passages defined therethrough, a first coolant pump, and a first radiator. The system additionally comprises a second coolant pump, a second radiator, and a liquid-to-air heat exchanger configured to condition the temperature of intake air to the engine. The system further includes a coolant valve means. For a first configuration of the coolant valve means the first coolant pump is configured to urge coolant through the coolant passages in the engine and through the first radiator, and the second coolant pump is configured to urge coolant through the liquid-to-air heat exchanger and through the second radiator. For a second configuration of the coolant valve means the second coolant pump is configured to urge coolant through the coolant passages in the engine and through the liquid-to-air heat exchanger. A method for controlling the system is also disclosed.

Engine restart aid

A method is provided for diagnosing a multi-mode valve train device which selectively provides high lift and low lift to a combustion valve of an internal combustion engine having a camshaft phaser actuated by an electric motor. The method includes applying a variable electric current to the electric motor to achieve a desired camshaft phaser operational mode and commanding the multi-mode valve train device to a desired valve train device operational mode selected from a high lift mode and a low lift mode. The method also includes monitoring the variable electric current and calculating a first characteristic of the parameter. The method also includes comparing the calculated first characteristic against a predetermined value of the first characteristic measured when the multi-mode valve train device is known to be in the desired valve train device operational mode.

Diagnostic for two-mode variable valve activation device

A vehicle control system for controlling a vehicle deceleration rate that includes a dynamo (e.g. generator/motor) coupled to the vehicle to provide a dynamo deceleration force to the vehicle corresponding to an electric load, an internal combustion engine coupled the vehicle to provide an engine deceleration force to the vehicle corresponding to a throttle position, and a controller coupled to the internal combustion engine and the dynamo. The controller is configured determine a deceleration fuel cutoff (DFCO) request based on an accelerator pedal position, and when a DFCO request is determined increase the throttle position to decrease the engine deceleration force, and increase the electric load on the dynamo to increase the dynamo deceleration force, to control the vehicle deceleration rate.
