Disclosed herein is a composite comprising an elastomer with an embedded network of liquid metal inclusions. The composite retains similar flexibility to that of an elastomer but exhibits electrical and thermal properties that differ from the properties of a homogeneous elastomer. The composite has applications for wearable devices and other soft matter electronics, among others.

Polymer composite with liquid phase metal inclusions

One example provides a circuit structure comprising a liquid metal conductive path enclosed in an encapsulant, a polymer circuit support comprising a polymer having a functional species available for a condensation reaction, and a cross-linking agent covalently bonding the encapsulant to the polymer circuit support via the functional species.

Connecting a flexible circuit to other structures

Examples are disclosed that relate to flexible electrical interconnects in electronic devices. One example provides a device including a flexible substrate, a conductive trace disposed on the flexible substrate, an electronic component mounted to the flexible substrate, a liquid metal interconnect bridging between a pad on the component and the trace on the flexible substrate, and an encapsulant covering the interconnect.

Flexible conductive bonding

Examples are disclosed that relate to magnetically aligned switching circuits. One disclosed example provides an electronic component comprising a first terminal, a second terminal, and a deformable host material arranged between the first terminal and the second terminal. Aligned magnetically within the host material is an ensemble of particles each comprising a ferromagnetic material, each particle having greater electrical conductivity than the host material. The ensemble of particles is configured to form at least one complete conduction path from the first terminal to the second terminal.

Various examples of deformable sensors are disclosed. In one example, a deformable sensor comprises a ground electrode comprising a plurality of spatially separated lines, and a set of individually-indexed signal channels interdigitated with the spatially separated lines, each individually-indexed signal channel comprising a stretchable conductive path encapsulated in an elastomeric material.

Deformable touch and strain sensor

One example provides a flexible electrical interconnect comprising a substrate, a liquid conductive pathway supported by the substrate, and a conductively anisotropic, magnetic particle-embedded encapsulant that interfaces with the liquid conductive pathway for connecting to another circuit element.
