A centrifugal separation rotor for an apparatus, which removes contaminants from a pumped liquid, such as engine lubricant, by rotating it about axis at high speed includes a separation and containment vessel that permit liquid to leave the vessel as fast as it can enter, so that a zone is defined adjacent a side wall that holds a volume of liquid less than the whole volume encompassed by the vessel walls and filled in conventional high speed separators. A divider wall surface is interrupted by a set of upstanding vanes, which extend along it and around the axle as a helix of such pitch as to form both collector vanes to guide liquid entering between the rotating vanes towards the transfer passage. Motor vanes receive one or more jets of liquid impinging thereon at a glancing angle to drive the rotor before being guided along the inlet zone.

Liquid driven centrifugal separation apparatus and open vessel rotor with improved efficiency

A rotor () for a centrifugal separator () for circulated engine lubricant formed by end walls () and radially outer and inner side walls () that define a separation and containment region (). Wall () is defined by a tubular tension member () that surrounds a rotation axis () and extends between and through the end walls to keep them in position. Mounted within first and second ends () of the tubular tension member are respective first and second end closure plugs (). Plug () has a passage () to admit liquid into the tubular member, but otherwise each plug is seated to inhibit passage of liquid from the member end. Each plug comprises a body seated by interference fit and an integral axially extending component () that forms a mounting pin for mounting the rotor within bearing parts () of the housing. Closure plugs may be assembled from separate plug body and fixed or rotatable mounting pin components and may extend along the tubular member and be coupled to each other, or be formed integrally as a unitary body, or share a common mounting pin that extends between discrete plug bodies.

Centrifugal separator and rotor therefor

A centrifugal separator for separating dirt particles from a fluid includes a separator cylinder, which rotates in a separator housing and into which the fluid to be cleaned is introduced. A detection device for indicating the operating state of the separator cylinder is provided, which includes a radially extending guide tube in which a detection element is accommodated in such a way that the detection element can be outwardly displaced within the guide tube under the influence of centrifugal force when the separator cylinder rotates and can move between a normal position and a contamination-indicating position.

Centrifugal separator with rotation detector

A centrifugal separator(FIG.) for removing contaminants from a pumped liquid such as engine lubricant, having a separation rotorrotatable about axisat high speed by a jetof the liquid impinging upon impulse turbine blades. The rotor includes a separation and containment vesselhaving impervious side wallspaced from the rotation axis and at least one end wallopen atpermit liquid to leave the vessel as fast as it can enter, so that a zoneis defined adjacent side wallthat holds a volume of liquid much less than the whole volume encompassed by the vessel walls and filled in conventional high speed separators. Lower inertia and reduced pressure gradients in the liquid permit it to be spaced further from the axis than is conventional, with improved separation efficiency. Liquid may be supplied to zonein any convenient manner but as shown spent turbine liquid' is collected on a rotating surfaceof a divider wallthat spreads and/or directs the liquid to transfer passagesfrom which it is flung centrifugally to the separation zone. The outer side wallof the vessel which collects contaminants may be a replaceable attachment to the divider wall/turbine part. The rotor may alternatively comprise such a vessel surrounding a conventional, filled canister to effect a radial increase in such rotor without comparable increase in the volume of liquid contained.

Centrifugal separator for separating solid contaminants from a liquid, rotor for use therein and method of separating contaminants from liquids

A centrifugal separtor for non-cohesive particulates, such as are found in transmission oils and hydraulic liquids, rather than the cohesive combustion products found within internal combustion engine lubricants, consists of a housing enclosing a vertical spindle on which spins a liquid reaction driven rotor container. The container is divided internally by inwardly extending partition wall into separate outflow chambers. Non-cohesive particulates which separate from the liquid, and are held against the peripheral side wall by centrigual force during rotation, slump therefrom in the absence of rotation and risk forming a slurry that gets carried to the outflow chamber. An upwardly extending, outwardly inclined barrier wall forms a contaminant retention region with a restricted neck defined by the separation of the barrier wall edge from the side wall, that permits deposits on the barrier wall to carry to the peripheral side wall and spread across it during rotation, and does not interfere with slumping absent rotation and inhibits the slumped material from being washed into the outflow before rotation recommences.

Centrifugal separator with one or more internal contaminant barriers

A centrifugal separator ( ) for an engine includes a rotor ( ) mounted within a housing ( ) for rotation on hollow spindle ( ) to the end of which oil is supplied at high pressure to enter the rotor. To prevent the rotor from flying from the base and oil spraying if the cover ( ) is removed without shutting off the oil supply via optional valve ( ), a rotor restraint ( ) is provided in the form of a ring ( ) which surrounds and overlies a flange of the rotor. The ring may be complete or discontinuous and may also include an interlock to prevent attachment of the cover and/or supply of oil if the ring is not in place.

Centrifugal separator with an arrangement for hindering inadvertent cover removal

A centrifugal separator comprises a housing through which extends a spindle on which is mounted a centrifuge rotor. The rotor is mounted on journal bearing bushes that are lubricated by the liquid supplied at pressure to the rotor and the weight of the liquid-filled rotor is carried by magnetic repulsion thrust bearing comprising permanent magnets secured one each to the housing and rotor. The spaced magnets run without contact noise and frictional losses, improving rotational speed available from the supply pressure, and lateral (radial) instability that is inherent between repelling magnets and normally disliked puts a radial bias on the journal bearings which may result in quieter running by inhibiting vibration, particularly when the journal bushes are starved of liquid supply during wind-down. Alternatively or additionally, supply pressure induced lift of the rotor may be borne by a magnetic repulsion thrust bearing. The magnets may be permanent and/or electromagnets.

Centrifugal separator

A self-powered centrifugal separator for removing particulate contaminants from engine lubricant includes a rotor canister which is spun at high speed about a vertical axle by ejection of the lubricant supplied to the canister at elevated pressure by way of apertures in a bearing tube near the upper end of the canister. The canister is separated into upper separation chamber and lower outflow chamber by an annular partition wall which defines a transfer aperture between the chambers by its radially inner edge. The edge of the partition wall also supports concentrically within the separation chamber a separation funnel arrangement having an inclined surface supporting alternate separation ribs and scavenging apertures. Liquid entering the separation chamber is directed radially outwardly and under pressure gradient moves inwardly along the inclined surface. The ribs stand up sharply and create eddies which effect separation of particulate contaminants and their deposition at the surface. Centrifugal forces carry such deposited materials through the scavenging apertures to deposit on the peripheral wall of the canister.
