A jet pump system and method facilitate the production of a subterranean fluid. The jet pump system comprises a jet pump, a surface pump, a surface pump gauge, and a pump driver coupled to the surface pump to change a drive frequency of the pump driver based on production parameters and pumping parameters of the surface pump (drive frequency (FR) of the surface pump and the power fluid parameters) whereby the surface pump is selectively varied to optimize production. The jet pump method involves deploying the jet pump into the wellbore; pumping power fluid through the jet pump using the surface pump; measuring the pumping parameters; generating the production parameters of the subterranean fluid produced (production rate (QP) of the subterranean fluid); and optimizing the producing by changing the drive frequency (FR) based on the measured power fluid parameters and the generated production parameters.

Jet pump system with optimized pump driver and method of using same

A method of tracking production from an NG source that includes the steps of providing one or more micro-scale GTL units, feeding NG from the source to the micro-scale GTL units, operating the micro-scale GTL units and adjusting the number of micro-scale GTL units employed to track or match the production from the source is provided. In some aspects of the invention, the micro-scale GTL unit includes both syngas manufacture and liquid product synthesis. The liquid product synthesis step may produce methanol, mixed higher carbon number alcohols, dimethyl ether, Fischer-Tropsch liquids, and/or any combination of these products.

Tracking feedstock production with micro scale gas-to-liquid units

The present invention contemplates implementation of transitory downhole video imaging and/or spectral imaging for the characterization of formation fluid samples in situ, as well as during flow through production tubing, including subsea flow lines, for permanent and/or long term installations. The present invention contemplates various methods and apparatus that facilitate one-time or ongoing downhole fluid characterization by video analysis in real time. The methods and systems may be particularly well suited to permanent and periodic intervention-based operations.

Spectral imaging for downhole fluid characterization

Methods and apparatus for downhole analysis of formation fluids by isolating the fluids from the formation and/or borehole in a pressure and volume control unit that is integrated with a flowline of a fluid analysis module and determining fluid characteristics of the isolated fluids. Parameters of interest may be derived for formation fluids in a static state and undesirable formation fluids may be drained and replaced with formation fluids that are suitable for downhole characterization or surface sample extraction. Isolated formation fluids may be circulated in a loop of the flowline for phase behavior characterization. Real-time analysis of the fluids may be performed at or near downhole conditions.

Methods and apparatus of downhole fluid analysis

A fluid analysis assembly for analyzing a fluid the fluid analysis assembly includes a chamber, a fluid movement device, a pressurization assembly and at least one sensor. The chamber defines an evaluation cavity for receiving the fluid. The fluid movement device has a force medium applying force to the fluid to cause the fluid to move within the cavity. The pressurization assembly changes the pressure of the fluid in a continuous manner. The at least one sensor communicates with the fluid for sensing at least one parameter of the fluid while the pressure of the fluid is changing in the continuous manner.

Fluid analysis method and apparatus

The invention concerns an apparatus for analysing water chemistry. According to the invention, the apparatus is adapted to operate downhole and comprises a colouring agent supply device for supplying a colouring agent to a water sample, the colour of the water sample thus supplied being indicative of the water sample chemistry, and a colorimetric analyser arranged to determine the colour of the water sample.

Apparatus and method for analysing downhole water chemistry

A sample module is provided for use in a downhole tool to obtain fluid from a subsurface formation penetrated by a wellbore. The sample module includes a sample chamber carried by the module for collecting a sample of formation fluid obtained from the formation via the downhole tool, and a validation chamber carried by the module for collecting a substantially smaller sample of formation fluid than the sample chamber. The validation chamber is removable from the sample module at the surface without disturbing the sample chamber. A sample chamber is also provided that includes a substantially cylindrical body capable of safely withstanding heating at the surface, following collection of a formation fluid sample via the downhole tool and withdrawal of the sample chamber from the wellbore, to temperatures necessary to promote recombination of the sample components within the chambers. Additionally, the body is equipped so as to be certified for transportation. At least one floating piston is slidably positioned within the body so as to define a fluid collection cavity and a pressurization cavity, whereby the pressurization cavity may be charged to control the pressure of the sample collected in the collection cavity. A second such piston may be provided to create a third cavity wherein a buffer fluid may be utilized during sample collection. Metal-to-metal seals act as the final shut-off seals for the sample collected in the collection cavity of the body. A method related to the use of the sample module and sample chamber described above is also provided.

Formation fluid sampling apparatus and method

A viscometer for a down hole tool positionable in a well bore penetrating a subterranean formation is described. The formation contains at least one fluid therein. The down hole tool is adapted to convey at least a portion of the fluid to the viscometer. The viscometer comprises a sensor unit, and at least one magnet. The sensor unit is positionable within the down hole tool and comprises at least two spatially disposed clamps and a wire suspended in tension between the at least two clamps such that the wire is available for interaction with the fluid when the viscometer is positioned within the down hole tool and the down hole tool is positioned within the subterranean formation and receives the fluid from the subterranean formation.

Apparatus and method for formation evaluation

A method and apparatus is provided to determine downhole pressures, such as annular pressure and/or pore pressure, during a drilling operation. A downhole drilling tool includes at least one conduit and a corresponding gauge. The conduit is positioned in the downhole tool and has an opening adapted to receive downhole fluids. The conduit is positionable in fluid communication with one of the wellbore and the formation whereby pressure is equalized therebetween. The gauge is provided for measuring the pressure in the conduit.

Method and apparatus for determining downhole pressures during a drilling operation

A receptacle () for use in collecting samples down a well bore () is provided, the receptacle comprising a plurality of interconnecting modules (). A main chamber () is capable of holding a sample, and sensors () within the chamber detect physical and chemical characteristics of the sample. Valves () in a chamber wall seal the chamber () after a fluid sample has been collected. A communication means is placed in communication with the chamber () so as to provide an externally accessible port which communicates with the inside of the chamber () and allows detection and analysis of sample characteristics without removing the sample from the sealed chamber (). The chamber () includes a piston () which is adjustable to keep pressure constant in the chamber and a heating element () to keep temperature constant. A method for sampling downhole fluids is also provided.

Receptacle for sampling downhole

Water-based mud filtrate concentration in a downhole fluid sample drawn from the borehole of an oil well is assessed. To measure water-based mud filtrate concentration, a water-based mud having a water-soluble fluorescent dye tracer is pumped into the borehole; sample fluid from a selected downhole location is pumped through a downhole flow line having a window; sample fluid flowing in an excitation region of the downhole flow line is illuminated through the window with fluorescence excitation light; and fluorescence emission from the excitation region is measured to produce a measured value. The measured value represents the fraction of water-based mud filtrate in the sample fluid. A calibration value is determined representing 100% water-based mud filtrate. A method for validating a sample of connate water as having an acceptably low WBM filtrate contamination tests for validation downhole, in real time. Each measured value of the series of measured values is compared with a predetermined fraction of a calibration value. Samples that are validated may be captured and brought to the surface for analysis. A method using the time series data and a predetermined fraction of the calibration value calculates a predicted flushing time to completion.

Assessing downhole WBM-contaminated connate water

The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for detection of hydrogen sulfide in downhole operations. A downhole tool is provided with a coupon adapted to react at varying degrees to exposure to concentrations of hydrogen sulfide. The downhole tool is positioned in the wellbore with the coupon(s) exposed to downhole fluids. A reaction to a change in the coupon, such as coloration, is used to determine the presence and concentration of hydrogen sulfide.

Method and apparatus for hydrogen sulfide monitoring

A method and apparatus detects dew precipitation and determines dew precipitation onset pressure in a sample of formation fluid located downhole in an oilfield reservoir. In a preferred embodiment, the method includes (a) isolating a sample of formation fluid downhole; (b) illuminating the sample downhole with fluorescence excitation light; (c) measuring at least one characteristic of fluorescence short from the sample; (d) reducing pressure on the sample; (e) repeating steps (b) to (d); (f) detecting dew precipitation when a change is detected in a parameter that is a function of the at least one characteristic of fluorescence emission; and (g) setting dew precipitation onset pressure equal to pressure on the sample when the change in the parameter is detected. The parameter preferably is a function of fluorescence intensity and fluorescence red shift, and the change is an increase in fluorescence intensity and detection of fluorescence red shift. Also, the function includes a ratio of a measured intensity at a first wavelength to a reference intensity, and the reference intensity is a function of a measured intensity at a second wavelength.

Determining dew precipitation and onset pressure in oilfield retrograde condensate

A method for refining fluid sample data includes obtaining optical density data for a fluid sample in at least two color channels and at least one fluid component channel and determining a color-absorption function from the optical density data for the fluid sample in the at least two color channels. The method also includes calculating a portion of the optical density caused by color absorptions in each of the at least one fluid component channels, and de-coloring the optical density data in each of the at least one fluid component channels by removing the portion of the optical density data caused by color absorption.

Optical fluid analysis signal refinement

A method for determining properties of a formation fluid including obtaining data related to an optical density at a methane peak and an optical density at an oil peak for a fluid sample at a plurality of times, calculating an apparent gas-oil-ratio of the sample fluid from the optical density of the fluid sample at the methane peak to the optical density of the fluid sample at the oil peak at each of the plurality of times based on the data, selecting a power function of a sampling parameter for a buildup of the apparent gas-oil-ratio, calculating an exponential constant of the power function based on the data, and determining at least one selected from the group consisting of a contamination free gas-oil-ratio and a percent contamination.
