Methods, systems, and computer program products for characterizing materials in a wellbore having multiple casing strings uses well completion data and instantaneous frequency, instantaneous phase, and/or amplitude attributes, including waveform amplitude or instantaneous amplitude, of an acoustic waveform to determine material densities, acoustic velocities and acoustic travel distances for the materials between the various stages of casings.

Characterization of wellbore materials in multiple casing strings

Systems and methods for placing well bores and/or portions of completed well systems in a subterranean formation relative to tar mats or other phenomena in the formation are provided. In some embodiments, the methods comprise: identifying a reservoir characteristic associated with a chemical or physicochemical property of a fluid in or proximate to the reservoir characteristic; measuring the property of a fluid in at least a portion of a subterranean formation in two or more locations in the subterranean formation; identifying a variation of the property of the fluid at one or more of the locations in the subterranean formation; and determining a target location or direction for a portion of a well system based at least in part on the variation of the property of the fluid, the well system comprising a borehole penetrating the subterranean formation.

Logging of fluid properties for use in subterranean drilling and completions

A method for forming a high resolution logging while drilling image includes receiving a logging while drilling data set and selecting a borehole grid. The borehole grid includes a plurality of pixels that define discrete azimuthal positions and depth positions in the borehole. The LWD data set is mapped to the selected borehole grid such that an azimuthal position and a depth position are assigned to each data point in the data set. An interpolation routine is used to fill empty pixels. Disclosed embodiments enable high resolution LWD imaging that may resolve various fine formation features such as fractures, fine bedding layers, breakout, and vugs.

A method for providing an image of a formation surrounding a wellbore, includes: obtaining an apparent conductivity curve from main components of resistivity measurements of the formation; performing fitting for cross-components of the resistivity measurements; calculating scaling factors from the cross-component data; scaling apparent conductivity data by the calculated scaling factors; and plotting the scaled conductivity data to provide the image of the anisotropic formation. A system and a computer program product are disclosed.

A system for positioning a wellbore tool in a wellbore intersecting a subterranean formation includes a tag embedded in the formation using a tag insertion device. The tag may be configured to transmit a signal that includes information. A wellbore tool may utilize a tag detection device to operatively link with the tag. This operative link may provide an indication of the relative position of the tag detection device or some other information.

The present invention provides a method and apparatus for logging an earth formation and acquiring subsurface information wherein a logging tool is conveyed in a borehole to obtain parameters of interest. The parameters of interest obtained may be density, acoustic, magnetic or electrical values as known in the art. As necessary, azimuths associated with the measurements are obtained and corrections applied. The corrected data may be filtered and/or smoothed. The parameters of interest associated with azimuthal sectors are depth matched, resolution matched and filtered, and the acquisition effects removed. The data are denoised using a multi-resolution wavelet transform. The data acquired with separate transducers are resolution matched to obtain a resolution matched data series. Subsequently the resolution matched data may be further denoised using a multi-resolution wavelet transform.
