A method and apparatus for providing adaptive horizontal synchronization (sync) signal detection to identify whether a high quality television signal is being received by a television set. The method determines whether no signal is applied, whether a weak signal is applied or a strong signal is applied to the television set by sampling and processing the horizontal synchronization signal. The signals are classified by comparing the sample horizontal synchronization signals to a predefined threshold. The threshold is established based upon the type of source that produced the television signal.

A memory management process for buffering progressive, interlaced, CCIR 601/656 compliant, and MPEG compliant video signals in a video memory that is partitioned into first and second buffers. The process includes identifying the format of a received video signal, buffering the received video signal in the video memory in accordance with a standard buffering mode if the video signal is in an interlaced, CCIR 601/656 compliant, or MPEG compliant format, and buffering the received video signal in the video memory in accordance with an override buffering mode if the video signal is in a progressive format such as a 240p signal generated by a game console, VCR, cable text generator, and the like.

Processing of progressive video signals in digital TV receivers

An inventive method for adapting a display frame rate in a receiver to a picture frame rate of a received signal includes the steps of comparing a picture frame rate of a received signal with a display frame of a receiver, adjusting lines per field or lines per frame displayed in response to the comparing step, and generating a display frame rate control signal for the receiver in response to the adjusting step.
