The invention is directed to a portable head support designed to fit in the interior of a carry-on article carried by a passenger. The device provides head support for those who prefer sleeping in a face-down position and comprises a base and a head support connected along at least one of their abutting edges by a mechanism which permits the angle between the base and head support to be adjusted by the user.

An aluminum piston including a cooling gallery with titled inner and outer side walls is provided. The piston comprises a ring belt with a ring grooves, and an iron insert is disposed in a top one of the ring grooves. To reduce stress and mass of the piston, material located under the iron insert is removed, so that the outer side wall of the cooling gallery is tilted toward the center axis. The inner side wall of the cooling gallery is tilted away from the center axis.

A post-surgical support member is configured to be placed a post-surgically between a supine patient and a support surface so as to isolate an anatomical load from a post-surgical wound against the support surface, the anatomical load produced by the weight of the supine patient.

A ferrous piston for gasoline powered engines having dimensions which achieve reduced mass and improved performance is provided. The piston crown has a thickness of less than 4 mm and includes valve pockets with an axial clearance between the valve pockets and an uppermost ring groove of less than 1.5 mm. The pin bosses have an axial thickness of less than 3.7% of a bore diameter, which is the largest outer diameter of the piston, measured between a pin bore and the crown at 1 mm from an inner face forming the pin bore. Each pin boss has a radial thickness of less than 3% of the bore diameter measured between the pin bore and a lower end of the pin boss. An undercrown surface presents a projected area of less than 45% of a total piston bore area, wherein the total piston bore area is &#x3c0;BD/4, BD being the bore diameter.

Piston

An assembly including a connecting rod, a bushing, and a locking pin capable of providing different compression ratios in an engine is provided. The bushing is disposed in a bore of the connecting rod. An outer surface of the bushing includes a pair of notches, and an inner surface of the connecting rod includes a corresponding notch for receiving the locking pin. The notches are spaced from one another by greater than 180&#xb0; and by no more than 190&#xb0;. The locking pin is movable in the notch, allowing the bushing to rotate from a low compression position to a high compression position, or vice versa. The bushing has a varying thickness, and thus a center axis of an opening of the bushing is closer to the shaft of the connecting rod body when the bushing is in the low compression orientation than in the high compression orientation.

Variable compression ratio connecting rod

A piston for an internal combustion engine is provided. The piston includes a piston body of steel and including a crown portion, a pair of skirt portions and a pair of pin boss panels. The crown portion has an upper combustion surface, a lower surface having an undercrown surface area and an outer annular ring belt with at least one ring groove. The pin boss panels depend from the crown portion and extend in spaced relationship with one another between the skirt portions. Each pin boss panel includes a pin boss having a pin bore, and the pin bores are aligned with one another for receiving a wrist pin. Each pin boss panel also has at least one recess located vertically between the associated one of the pin bores and the crown portion to increase the undercrown surface area for improved cooling of the crown portion.

Engine piston

A wrist pin and method of reducing wear between members thereof, a piston, a connecting rod, and methods of construction thereof are provided. The wrist pin has a first portion extending between opposite ends configured for receipt in piston pin bores and a second portion extending between opposite ends configured for receipt in the pin bores. The second portion is configured for relative movement with the first portion. The piston includes a piston body having axially aligned pin bores, wherein at least one of the pin bores has a feature to prevent relative rotation of a wrist pin member. The connecting rod includes a connecting rod body having small end bore. The small end bore has a contour to allow relative rotation of a first wrist pin member therein and a feature to prevent relative rotation of a second wrist pin member therein.

Wrist pin and method of reducing wear between members thereof, connecting rod, piston and methods of constructing same

A piston assembly comprises a piston body, a connecting rod, and a wrist pin. The piston body includes a pair of first cross bores presenting a piston sliding surface. The connecting rod includes a second cross bore presenting a rod sliding surface which is axially aligned with the first cross bores of the piston body. A wrist pin is disposed in the aligned cross bores and couples the piston body to the connecting rod. The wrist pin also presents a pin sliding surface facing the rod sliding surface and the piston sliding surfaces. A coating is applied to at least one of the sliding surfaces, such as by dipping, brushing, atomizing, spraying, printing, or screen printing. The coating includes a polymer matrix, such as polyamide imide (PAI), and hard particles, such as FeO, disposed throughout the polymer matrix. The hard particles have a hardness of at least 600 HV/0.5.

An improved piston ring for use as an intermediate piston ring in a piston assembly having three or more piston rings is provided. The piston ring includes a piston ring body which extends through an arcuate shape between opposite end faces. The piston ring body has at least one combustion gas guidance feature for allowing a greater flow of combustion gasses to pass the piston ring body when the piston is moving in one direction and for allowing a lesser flow of combustion gasses to pass the piston ring body when the piston is moving in an opposite direction. This allows for the ring gap at the outer diameter of the piston ring to be minimized without creating flutter in another piston ring above the intermediate piston ring during operation of an engine.
