This invention relates to a dirt-collection chamber () for a vacuum cleaner, and in particular a dirt-collection chamber () which is removable whereby the collected dirt can easily be disposed of. The dirt-collection chamber () has an air inlet () and an air outlet (), a filter () between the air inlet () and the air outlet (), and a disposal opening with an openable cover (). The dirt-collection chamber () has a dirt-removal panel () in the chamber which is movable towards and away from the disposal opening to assist in the disposal of collected dirt and debris.

This invention relates to a suction head () for a vacuum cleaner and method of operation. The suction head () has a bottom surface () and one or more floor-engaging parts () adjacent to the bottom surface (), an opening () in the bottom surface () and a rotatable brush () located at the opening (). The suction head () has a front end () and a rear end (), the front end () having a recess () in communication with the opening (). A movable strip () is located in the recess (), the movable strip () being movable between a first position and a second position, the bottom edge of the movable strip() being closer to the plane of the floor-engaging parts () in its first position than in its second position. At least one first element () is connected to the movable strip () and is able to project to the plane of the floor-engaging parts (). At least one second element () is also connected to the movable strip (), the second element(s) () being configured differently to the first element(s) (), the second element(s) () being able to project to the plane of the floor-engaging parts () and being configured to move the movable strip () to a third position in use. The bottom edge of the movable strip () is closer to the plane of the floor-engaging parts () in its second position than in its third position. According to the method of operation, the movable strip () moves to its first position during backwards movement of the suction head () and to its third position during forwards movement of the suction head (), the movable strip () moving to its third position in two stages.

A dust and dirt separation assembly for use in a vacuum cleaner having a housing having a dirt collection chamber, a dirty air inlet, a clean air outlet, and an airflow path existing therebetween, a first separation means for separating articles of dirt from dirty air entering the housing, a filter element for separating smaller particles of dust from the dirty air, a selectively manually operable mechanical actuation mechanism including a snap-acting resilient element that changes from a first stable condition to a second condition when a sufficient force is applied, and an impact member actuable by the mechanical actuation mechanism to strike the filter element thereby dislodging dust particles therefrom to be collected in the dirt collection chamber.

Dust and dirt separation assembly

A vacuum cleaner includes a removable filter element and an indicator member having a first position when the filter member is removed from the cleaner and a second position when the filter member is in place in the cleaner and being readily visible to a user of the vacuum cleaner in at least one of the first and second positions. When the indicator member is in the first position, the vacuum cleaner cannot be used to collect dust and dirt.
