An enclosure for a rotor in a generator including the rotor, rotor windings and a stator, the enclosure comprising a plurality of composite rings located adjacent one another along a length dimension of the rotor so as to contain the rotor windings on the rotor, the rings each comprising at least two layers selected from the group consisting essentially of metals, glass fiber laminates and graphite fiber laminates.

A current limiting device comprises at least two electrodes; an electrically conducting composite material between the electrodes; interfaces between the electrodes and electrically conducting composite material; an inhomogeneous distribution of resistance at the interfaces whereby, during a high current event, adiabatic resistive heating at the interfaces causes rapid thermal expansion and vaporization and at least a partial physical separation at the interfaces; and a structure for exerting compressive pressure on the electrically conducting composite material, wherein the electrically conducting composite material comprises at least one polymer matrix and at least one conductive filler.

A process for preparing a polymer composition useful as a prepreg comprises (a) melt-mixing at least one thermoplastic polymer above the glass transition temperature or melt temperature of the thermoplastic polymer with either (i) an uncured epoxy resin or (ii) an epoxy curing agent or a catalyst; (b) melt-mixing above the glass transition temperature or melt temperature of the thermoplastic polymer, the other of (i) an uncured epoxy resin or (ii) an epoxy curing agent or a catalyst to form a substantially uncured but essentially curable and/or polymerizable composition; (c) optionally forming a shaped product from the melt-mixed composition of (b); and (d) fast-curing and/or fast-polymerizing the optionally formed shaped product.

Thermoplastic polyester composites are prepared from compositions comprising a filler, at least one macrocyclic poly(alkylene dicarboxylate) oligomer and a polymerization catalyst therefor. The use of polyester oligomer mixtures is preferred, and they may be present in liquid or solid form. The polyester composites prepared therefrom are characterized by excellent properties including solvent resistance.

Cyclic polycarbonate oligomers are converted to linear polycarbonates by the catalytic action of a monobasic metal salicylate. The polymerization reaction takes place only at relatively high temperatures, typically above about 220.degree. C., and rapidly only at temperatures above about 250.degree. C., and is therefore particularly useful in such operations as resin transfer molding. The catalyst may be coated on a fibrous reinforcing material used for composite formation.
