A pivoting axle system for an aerial lift vehicle with a chassis includes a left axle supporting a left wheel and a right axle supporting a right wheel. The left and right axles are pivotable between a transport position and a working position. A first hydraulic cylinder is connected at one end to the chassis on a right side of a vehicle center line and at an opposite end to the left axle, and a second hydraulic cylinder is connected at one end to the chassis on a left side of the vehicle center line and at an opposite end to the right axle. In the working position, the first and second hydraulic cylinders are prevented from deflection beyond a yield point.

Pivoting axle system

A multiple envelope control system and method expands the operating capabilities of a lift vehicle. The vehicle includes a platform mounted to a telescoping main boom. The main boom is configured for lift/lower function and telescope function. The multiple envelope control system includes a selector switch for selecting between a plurality of capacity modes including at least a low load mode and a high load mode. A plurality of sensors are strategically positioned on the main boom to cooperatively define position zones of the platform. A control system determines in which position zone the platform located according to signals from the plurality of sensors. The control system controls an envelope of the platform based on a position of the selector switch. By strategically positioning the sensors to define the position zones, inexpensive switches, such as limit switches or the like, can be used, thereby reducing manufacturing costs of the machine.

Lift vehicle with multiple capacity envelope control system and method

A tower boom path is controlled in a boom lift vehicle such that the tower boom nose pin follows a predetermined path. The boom lift vehicle includes a telescoping lift tower boom pivotally coupled at one end to a vehicle base. A main boom is pivotally coupled to the tower boom nose pin at an opposite end of the tower boom. Raising and lowering of the tower boom between a fully retracted position and a raised position is effected by pivoting the tower boom relative to the vehicle base and telescoping the tower boom. The raised position is defined according to any position up to a maximum angle of the tower boom relative to the vehicle base and a maximum boom length. In order to reduce vehicle weight and expedite the tower boom lift function, pivoting of the tower boom relative to the vehicle base and telescoping of the tower boom are performed simultaneously so that the tower boom nose pin follows the predetermined path. With this arrangement, positions of the tower and main booms conventionally generating large turning moments on the vehicle can be avoided, and consequently, a counterweight of lower mass can be used.

Boom lift vehicle and method of controlling lifting functions

A boom lift vehicle includes a tower boom pivotally coupled at one end to a vehicle base for tower lift function and rotatable relative to the vehicle base for swing function. A main boom is pivotally coupled to an opposite end of the tower boom for main lift function. A tower boom elevation angle is defined as a maximum allowable tower boom angle relative to the vehicle base for transport. When the tower boom is below the tower boom elevation angle, the main boom angle relative to gravity is maintained at a set point angle, which is determined as the main boom angle (1) at the start of the swing function or vehicle drive, or (2) at a conclusion of the main lift function when combined with at least one of the swing function or vehicle drive. Additional control of the tower boom is effected when the tower boom is above the tower boom elevation angle. In this manner, stability profiles are facilitated while expanding slope requirements of a similar weight vehicle or while maintaining existing slope requirements with a lighter vehicle. The improved boom control additionally provides for safer and smoother operation.

Boom lift vehicle and method of controlling boom angles

A vehicle includes a chassis supporting two front axle assemblies and two rear axle assemblies. Each of the front and rear axle assemblies includes an extendible and retractable axle supporting an independently steerable wheel and a steering mechanism. The axles of the respective front and rear axle assemblies are offset from each other. By providing independently steerable wheels, the vehicle is operable in a plurality of steering modes including two-wheel steer, crab steer and coordinated steer. A steering angle for each steering wheel is determined according to a steering angle of an inside front wheel on a turn-by-turn basis.

Vehicle with offset extendible axles and independent four-wheel steering control

A boom mechanism that is cooperable with a lift vehicle or base structure includes a tower boom and an upper boom liftable in a dependent relationship by a single lifting mechanism. The tower boom and the upper boom are respectively pivotally secured to an upright having a fixed orientation by a tower link or the like. A timing link is secured between the tower boom and the upper boom, and a lifting mechanism is secured between the upright and the upper boom. As the upper boom is driven by the lifting mechanism, the timing link secured to the tower boom causes the tower boom to pivot about a tower boom nose pivot, thereby raising both the upper boom and the tower boom in a dependent relationship. The construction helps to minimize the need for tail and frame counterweight by controlling a position of the platform in configurations of both forward and rearward instability. As a consequence, the gross vehicle weight can be considerably reduced.

Boom mechanism

Load-bearing apparatus, such as a boom lift, including first and second arm portions, in which at least one element, such as a hydraulic cylinder, is provided for selectively imparting a predetermined dependent relationship as well as a predetermined independent relationship between the first and second arm portions. The manufacture of such load-bearing apparatus can be customized by preselecting the dependent and independent relationships by altering given parameters.
