A process for producing functionalized activated carbon product includes creating grafting sites on a surface of an activated carbon product, to yield a precursor activated carbon product; exposing the precursor activated carbon product to at least a first vinyl monomer; and initiating a polymerization reaction to graft at least the first vinyl monomer to the grafting sites and polymerize the first vinyl monomer to yield the functionalized activated carbon product. A functionalized activated carbon product includes an activated carbon product having a surface and at least a first polymer grafted to the surface. A process for removing contaminants from water includes adding a functionalized activated carbon product to contaminated water, wherein the functionalized activated carbon product includes an activated carbon product having a surface and at least a first polymer grafted to the surface; and allowing the functionalized activated carbon product to adsorb contaminants from the contaminated water.

The present disclosure relates to anti-corrosion sol-gel material. In particular, the disclosure relates to a cross-linked sol-gel material comprising a first colloidal sol gel made from silanols having an epoxy functionality and a second colloidal sol gel made from silanols having a thiol functionality.

Superior protective coatings for corrosion susceptible substrates are provided by lower alkoxysilane-epoxy polymeric compounds produced by sol-gel polymerization and cross-linked by reaction with an aromatic diamine cross-linking agent such as a phenylenediamine.

Coatings for corrosion susceptible substrates

An aqueous composition for applying to and treating metallic substrates that does not include chrome or chromium-containing compounds, does not include an organic solvent, and promotes adhesion of overcoat layers that are applied to the metallic substrate. The composition is an aqueous solution that includes of two hydrolyzed silanes, and water, wherein the composition has a pH of less than or equal to 5 and is substantially free of organic solvent and any chromium-containing compound. Also provided is a method for applying a chromium-free treatment on a metallic substrate comprising mixing a cross-liking agent with the above-described composition and applying the resulting mixture to the metallic substrate, and drying the metallic substrate.
