Organization and assignment of access privileges to resources in a computer network. The resources of the network are organized into a hierarchical tree structure, with each node in the tree representing a resource, resource group, or resource instance. Read and/or write permission to one or more resources may be explicitly granted to the resource or implicitly granted based upon the location of the resource in the hierarchical structure. The access rights attach to the resource(s). Upon movement of the resource within the tree structure or to an alternate tree structure, the access rights associated therewith remain with the relocated resource.

Visibility control of resources

A method, apparatus, system, and signal-bearing medium that in an embodiment present a main view and at least one peek view of data. When the user selects to move the data from the main view to the peek view, a subset of data objects in the main view is selected based on an importance of the data objects and optionally based on the size of the peek view. The subset is copied to the peek view, and the peek view is dynamically updated when the data objects are updated. In this way, the user can monitor changes to the peek view while working on other data in the main view.

Moving data between views

Dynamically selecting which properties to display for a group of resources is provided. A selection of a group of resources is received to be viewed in a graphical user interface. A determination is made as to whether the group of resources is one of a plurality of previously saved groups of resources. Responsive to the group of resources being one of the plurality of previously saved groups of resources, a determination is made as to whether the previously saved group of resources has an associated saved group of properties. Responsive to the previously saved group of resources having the associated saved group of properties, a table is generated that comprises the previously saved group of resources and the associated saved group of properties. The table is then displayed to a user via a graphical user interface.

Dynamically selecting properties to display in a table based user interface

A method, storage medium, and electronic device that in an embodiment register a plurality of information suppliers and a plurality of areas of interest associated with the plurality of respective information suppliers. One of the plurality of areas of interest associated with one of the plurality of information suppliers is found that matches a field of interest requested by a client. A plurality of records is requested from the one of the plurality of information suppliers. A model norm is created based on a data dictionary, wherein a format of the data dictionary is standardized by an agreement among the plurality of information suppliers. A subset of a plurality of characteristics is selected from the plurality of records based on the model norm. A report is prepared with the subset.

Normalizing records

A method and apparatus for maintaining data consistency between a subject and an observer. In one embodiment, an observer configures an aspect with a desired update type indicator, and then instructs the aspect to attach itself to a subject. The subject sends an update to the aspect when it changes state. The aspect interrogates the update, generates a update type indication, and selectively communicates an update based on a comparison between the desired type indication and the update type indicator. Some embodiments may also selectively modify and accumulate the update.

Subject/observer update control method and apparatus

An apparatus, program product and method provide a generic error reporting and diagnosis framework that is readily suited for use in a wide variety of distributed computing environments, and that supports the autonomic reporting, diagnosis, and potentially the remediation of errors. The framework supports the encapsulation of symptomatic data associated with an error in a component of a distributed computing environment such that the encapsulated symptomatic data may be routed to an error processing facility, typically irrespective of the underlying nature of the error and the hardware and/or software platform of the component that generated the error. The error processing facility is in turn capable of routing the encapsulated symptomatic data to one or more diagnostic agents that are capable of processing the symptomatic data to prescribe a treatment for the error.

Automated error reporting and diagnosis in distributed computing environment

An object oriented framework mechanism for distributing and managing operations of a network application defines classes and class relationships that provide for easily extending the framework to define new heterogeneous operations in a network application. Core functions of the framework mechanism support operation management functions, which may include status reporting, error recovery, scheduling, reexecution of previously-defined operations, persistence of operations, and sharing of operations between users. The framework mechanism provides extensible functions that are extended by a user to define a network application. A network application can thus be defined by a user that supports any or all of the above-mentioned operation management functions without explicitly providing these functions, because these functions are part of the core function of the framework mechanism.

Object oriented framework mechanism and method for distributing and managing heterogenous operations of a network application

Detection of a failure in a multi-system application, includes detecting a first message between a first system and a second system and creating a connection object representing a connection between the first system and the second system. Thereafter, connection status is monitored with the connection object to detect a connection or system failure. The same connection object is used for all subsequent messages between the first system and the second system. The multi-system application uses service objects on the first and the second system, and when a connection or system failure is detected, failure handling is initiated, including notifying all service objects of the failure.

Routing asynchronous state changes in a multi-processing system having an end user system, a central application server system and an endpoint system, includes detecting a state change with a service object on the endpoint system, sending a notification to an associated service proxy object on the central application server system notifying the associated service proxy object of the state change, sending a notification to an associated distributed service object which is an owner of the service proxy notifying the associated distributed service object of the state change, sending a notification to an associated distributed service proxy object on the end user system notifying the associated distributed service proxy object of the state change, and posting an event to an associated owner window of the distributed service proxy object using a window identifier including sending a notification to the associated owner window notifying the associated owner window of the state change.
