A field device for an industrial process includes a current detector for detecting the amount of current consumed by the field device and an interface allowing the field device to communicate with at least one other device. The interface communicates a first alert when the amount of current consumed by the field device exceeds a first threshold and a second alert when the amount of current consumed by the field device is below a second threshold.

Current diagnostics for field devices

A field device for an industrial process includes device circuitry, a shunt circuit, a bulk supply a charging power regulator and a supplemental circuit. The device circuitry is configured to receive power and communicate data over a two-wire process control loop. The shunt circuit is configured to shunt an unused portion of the power to an electrical ground. The charging power regulator is configured to regulate an excess portion of the power to charge the bulk supply based on the unused portion. The supplemental circuit is powered by the bulk supply.

Field device charging power regulation

A process sensor assembly comprises a hollow protective housing, a temperature sensor, a process transmitter, and a transient protector. The temperature sensor includes a probe extending out of the hollow protective housing to a sensing location, and a top plate movably secured to the hollow protective housing so as to allow travel within the hollow protective housing with vibrations of the probe. The process transmitter is configured to process and transmit sensor signals from the temperature sensor, and is retained on the top plate to move with the temperature sensor within the hollow protective housing. The transient protector is configured to condition power for to the process transmitter, and is anchored to the process transmitter so as to move with the process transmitter within the hollow protective housing.

Temperature transmitter transient protector

A process variable transmitter is used to measure a process variable, and, in doing so, dynamically changes the resolution of the A/D converter based upon the measured value of the analog input signal. This can be done by automatically adjusting the configurable resolution gain adjustment based on the value of the analog signal being measured, by normalizing the input signal being measured so that it is centered in an optimal resolution window of the A/D converter, or by adjusting a voltage reference provided to the A/D converter.

Dynamically adjusted A/D resolution

A multiplexed input/output (I/O) system detects leakage currents on a selected input channel. The system includes a leakage detection multiplexer connected to provide an output selected from one of a plurality of input channels. In addition, the leakage detection multiplexer provides as part of the output measured leakage currents associated with the selected input channel. Based on the detected leakage currents, a determination can made regarding whether the detected leakage currents have compromised the integrity of the multiplexer output. In addition, the detected leakage current can be used to compensate the output provided by the multiplexer to account for the presence of leakage currents on the selected channel.

Detection and compensation of multiplexer leakage current

A temperature transmitter includes a dual-compartment housing and a head-mount temperature transmitter electronics module. The dual-compartment housing has a first compartment and a second compartment. The first compartment is configured to receive field wiring at a terminal block through at least one conduit. The first and second compartments are separated except for an electrical feedthrough therebetween. A head-mount temperature transmitter electronics module is disposed in the second compartment and is operably coupled to the terminal block in the first compartment.

Modular dual-compartment temperature transmitter

An industrial process control transmitter includes a first input configured to couple to a first sensor, and a second input configured to couple to a second sensor. Measurement circuitry is configured to couple to the first and second sensors and provide an output related to a sensed process variable. A multiplexer is configured to selectively couple the first and second sensors to the measurement circuitry. An equalizer circuit is coupled to the first and second sensors and configured to equalize a voltage potential between the first sensor and the measurement circuitry.
