This invention relates to a polyalpha-olefin (and hydrogenated analogs thereof) comprising more than 50 mole % of one or more C5 to C24 alpha-olefin monomers where the polyalpha-olefin has: a) 40 mole % or more of mm triads, b) a Bromine number of Y or greater, where Y is equal to 89.92*(V)'&#xb0;5863, where V is the Kinematic Viscosity of the polyalpha-olefin measured at 100&#xb0; C. in cSt, and c) 1,2 disubstituted olefins present at 7 mole % or more, preferably having Z mole % or more of units represented by the formula: where j, k and m are each, independently, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, or 22, n is an integer from 1 to 350, and where Z=8.420*Log(V)&#x2212;4.048, where V is the kinematic viscosity of the polyalpha-olefin measured at 1000 C in cSt This invention also relates to process to produce such polyalpha-olefins. 

Polyalpha-olefin compositions and processes to produce the same

Disclosed in one embodiment is a hydrocarbon blend made from 0.001 to 10 wt % of at least one poly-&#x3b1;-olefin, by weight of the blend, the at least one poly-&#x3b1;-olefin having a Kvwithin the range of from 10 to 3000 cSt and a molecular weight distribution within the range of from 1.0 to 4.5; and a base stock having a Kvbelow 20.0 cSt; wherein the at least one poly-&#x3b1;-olefin is present in an amount sufficient to lower the pour point of the blend by at least 5&#xb0; C. relative to the pour point of the base stock. In certain embodiments the blend is formed by (a) reacting a catalyst composition and a feed containing at least two sets of &#x3b1;-olefins, wherein the first set of &#x3b1;-olefins is selected from Cto C&#x3b1;-olefins and the second set of &#x3b1;-olefins is selected from Cor larger &#x3b1;-olefins. The &#x3b1;-olefin feed may have a number average carbon number of at least 8 carbon atoms or greater.

Pour point depressant for hydrocarbon compositions

The invention relates to industrial lubricant and grease compositions containing high viscosity index polyalphaolefins (HVI-PAO). The use of HVI-PAOs in industrial oils and greases application provides advantages in improved shear stability, wear property, foam property, energy efficiency and improved overall performance.

HVI-PAO in industrial lubricant and grease compositions

This disclosure relates to substantially atactic polymers of at least one of propylene, 1-butene or 1-pentene, processes for making such polymers and compositions including the polymers. The polymers may be used as lubricants or may be combined with low viscosity base stocks to form lubricants. The polymers may be made in the presence of a metallocene catalyst with a non-coordinating anion activator and optionally with hydrogen.

Base stocks and lubricant blends containing poly-alpha olefins

The present invention is directed to a method that determines the necessary and sufficient tests to relate a variety of apparently non-related tests to desired final test results. The present invention also provides a method to determine those tests which, having been shown capable to be used in a high-throughput environment, are able to predict end-use qualification test results for lubricants, greases or industrial fluids. As a corollary, the present invention provides a method to select lubricant formulations and components based on apparently non-related, but predictive tests. In an applied example, the present invention is directed to a device and method that produces and evaluates formulated lubricants, functional fluids, and greases by determining previously unknown relationships between Intermediate Tests and End-use Tests.

A lubricating composition for internal combustion engines especially useful with fuels having less than 350 ppm sulfur comprises a lubricating oil basestock, a boron containing ashless dispersant, a molybdenum containing friction reducing agent, a metal type detergent and zinc dithiophosphate.

Low ash, low phosphorus and low sulfur engine oils for internal combustion engines

High performance engine oils and other liquid lubricants comprise a liquid lubricant basestock of low viscosity from 1.5 to 12 cSt (100C) with two dissolved polymer components of differing molecular weights. The basestock is preferably a single PAO or blend of PAOs with a co-basestock component which is preferably an ester or an alkylated aromatic of comparable viscosity. The lower molecular weight polymer is highly viscoelastic in character and is preferably an HVI-PAO; this component in the lubricant which provides unexpectedly high film thickness and unexpectedly good wear protection under conditions where the second, higher molecular weight polymer may lose some or all of its thickening power. The use of the highly viscoelastic low molecular weight polymer in combination with the higher molecular weight thickener enables the production of very widely cross-graded engine oils, especially oils with a low temperature grading of 0W or better. Oils with cross gradings of 0W20, 0W30, 0W40 or even more widely cross graded, for example 0W70 or higher may be achieved.

High performance engine oil

A hydrocarbon oligomer and a process for its production is disclosed that is useful as a pour point depressant and as a combination pour point depressant and viscosity index improver for mineral oil or synthetic oil. The oligomer is also useful in modifying wax crystal formation at low temperature when added to distillate fuels. The oligomer is a near linear copolymer of a mixture of ethylene and C.sub.3 -C.sub.28 1-alkenes, or only 1-alkenes, wherein a large proportion of the pendant alkyl groups of the recurring 1-alkene monomer units contain between 14 and 22 carbon atoms. The oligomer is produced by polymerization of mixed 1-alkenes with reduced chromium oxide catalyst on silica support.

Hydrocarbon distillate fuels containing novel additive

A multi-phase lubricant composition useful in a process for lubricating one or more operating components which are exposed to an operating condition change is described. Under a condition at which the lubricants are at least partially miscible, the phases combine to provide a lubricant having a physical property which is modified to be more appropriate for lubricating under the new condition, such as a higher viscosity. Typically the lubricants are at least partially miscible at an elevated temperature and at least partially immiscible at lower temperatures. A density difference between the phases is preferred for ease of separating the phases. The composition is preferably a combination of a hydrocarbon oil and a polyalkylene glycol such as polypropylene glycol.

Multi-phase lubricant

A hydraulic system employing multi-phase hydraulic fluids in which a first phase hydraulic fluid has its properties modified by the addition of a second phase hydraulic fluid is described. Effective hydraulic actuation is achieved in a single system under extreme conditions, typically high and low temperatures.

Hydrocarbon lube and distillate fuel additive

An apparatus for lubricating an operating component of a system in which the operating component is exposed to a range of conditions, such as a range of temperatures, which require adjustment of at least one physical property of the lubricant is described. In one embodiment, at least a portion of the operating component is located within a lubricant reservoir which contains a first lubricant of low density and high viscosity and a second lubricant of higher density and lower viscosity. During certain operating conditions, the lubricants are at least partially immiscible, usually at lower temperatures, and the first lubricant is appropriate for those operating conditions. A change in at least one operating condition which promotes at least partial miscibility of the lubricants, such as higher temperatures, causes the first and second lubricants to mix, at least partially, and form a third lubricant. The third lubricant has at least one property which differs from that of the first and second lubricants, usually a different viscosity. The third lubricant contacts the operating component and is more appropriate for lubricating under the condition which causes at least partial miscibility. In an alternative embodiment the operating component is not located within the lubricant reservoir and the lubricant is conveyed to the operating component. Processes for lubricating are also described.

Multi-phase lubricant process for lubricating with multi-phase lubricants

An apparatus for lubricating an operating component of a system in which the operating component is exposed to a range of conditions, such as a range of temperatures which require adjustment of at least one physical property of the lubricant, is described. In one embodiment, the apparatus is useful for lubricating more than one operating component, each operating under a different operating condition. The apparatus utilizes a first lubricant and a second lubricant which are at least partially miscible, under a condition of at least partial miscibility, usually an elevated temperature. Under the condition of at least partial miscibility, the lubricants combine to provide a third lubricant. The third lubricant is dispensed to the operating component in response to a change in at least one operating condition which requires the properties of the third lubricant for efficient lubrication.

Multi-phase lubricant and apparatus for the dispensing thereof

A process for upgrading a light olefin feed by converting the 1-olefins to higher molecular weight oligomers and the iso-oleins to fuel ethers or alcohols. The process provides substantial improvements in the production of lower alkyl tertiary alkyl ethers or tertiary alkyl alcohol, such as methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), methyl tertiary amyl ether (TAME) or tertiary butyl alcohol. The 1-olefin component of the hydrocarbon feedstream is separated by selective oligomerization in contact with a reduced chromium oxide catalyst to form an olefin oligomer of higher molecular weight, such as gasoline, distillate and lube range hydrocarbons. The iso-olefins are separated by etherification with a lower alcohol such as methanol or by hydration to form an alcohol such as tertiary butanol. The oligomerization process can be integrated either upstream or downstream of the etherification step.

Production of tertiary alkyl ethers and tertiary alkyl alcohols

A method and apparatus for measuring thickness and traction properties of elastohydrodynamic lubricant (EHL) films is described. The apparatus utilizes at least one ball or roller loaded against the internal diameter of a transparent ring having a larger radius than said ball or roller. A lubricant is placed between the rotating roller and ring thereby forming an EHL film where the ball and ring contact. Roller and ring rotating speeds are controlled to obtain different amounts of relative sliding motion between their surfaces. Contact between the surfaces and the resultant film are observed via the transparent ring which allows optical measurements of lubricating film thickness. Traction forces generated during contact are measured by any suitable force measuring device.
