A system and method for communicating information signals using spread spectrum communication techniques. PN sequences are constructed that provide orthogonality between the users so that mutual interference will be reduced, allowing higher capacity and better link performance. With orthogonal PN codes, the cross-correlation is zero over a predetermined time interval, resulting in no interference between the orthogonal codes, provided only that the code time frames are time aligned with each other. In an exemplary embodiment, signals are communicated between a cell-site and mobile units using direct sequence spread spectrum communication signals. In the exemplary embodiment, transmit power of mobile unit signals is controlled based on signal power received by the mobile unit and power adjustment commands sent to the mobile unit.

System and method for generating signal waveforms in a CDMA cellular

A soft decision output decoder and decoding method. The decoder decodes a sequence of signals output by an encoder and transmitted over a channel. The soft decision output decoder includes a first 'generalized' Viterbi decoder for decoding the sequence of signals received over the channel during a forward iteration through a trellis representing the encoder output having a block length T. The first 'generalized' Viterbi decoder begins at an initial state t.sub.0 and provides a plurality of forward iteration state metrics .alpha. for each state at each time interval over a window of length 2L, where L is on the order of a few constraint lengths and 2L is less than a block length T. A second 'generalized' Viterbi decoder decodes the sequence of signals received over the channel during a backward iteration through the trellis. The second decoder starts at a second time t2L and provides a plurality of backward iteration state metrics .beta. for each state at each time interval. A processor then performs a dual maxima computation at each state using the forward state metric, the backward state metric and the branch metric for same to provide a measure of the likelihood that a particular sequence of data was transmitted by the encoder. The processor computes a log of the likelihood ratio using the forward and backward state metrics and the branch metrics for a selected state. This is achieved by first computing a max function as an approximation of the measure of the likelihood that a particular sequence of data was transmitted by the encoder. By performing forward and backward Viterbi decoding with dual maxima computations at each node within a window moved over the trellis, the inventive decoder provides the performance benefits associated with a LOG-MAP decoder while avoiding the excessive memory requirements of same.

Soft decision output decoder for decoding convolutionally encoded

The modulator repeats the data symbols within each frame to maintain a constant data rate. A communication system for transmitting variable rate data is disclosed wherein redundancy is added to the variable rate data to provide repetition symbols. The repetition symbol data is transmitted with symbol energy scaled in accordance to the rate of the variable rate data when the variable rate data is greater than or equal to a nominal data rate. When the variable rate data is less than the nominal data rate, the symbol data is transmitted at nominal symbol energy and redundancy is removed by transmission gating of a proportion of the transmission symbol data determined in accordance with the rate of the variable rate data. Furthermore, a receiver for receiving the variable rate data is disclosed which uses the redundancy in the transmitted data symbol stream to make a corrected estimate of the transmitted symbol data.

Method and apparatus for transmission of variable rate digital data

A method and apparatus for decoding an orthogonally encoded data signal in a noncoherent receiver system. The method is referred to as dual-maxima metric generation. It comprises the steps of sequentially searching for a maximum energy level in each of two subsets of a given set of symbol indexes and associated energy levels and calculating a difference of the two values to form a soft decision output value. The two subsets are identified by the binary value (either '0' or '1') of a given digit of the binary equivalent of the symbol index. The soft decision output value reflects a measure of confidence of the value of the corresponding digit of the original signal. The dual-maxima generator sequences through the steps one time for each binary digit of the original signal. The method allows the correlated energy from multiple receivers to be combined before the decoding of the signals, thus further reducing the complexity of the circuitry and improving the performance of the decoder.

An encoder and decoder for generating and decoding convolutional codes of enhanced orthogonality. In an exemplary embodiment the encoder includes a K bit length shift register for receiving an input serial stream of information bits and providing for each input bit a K bit parallel output to an orthogonal code sequence generator where one of 2.sup.K-1 symbol sequences is generated with each symbol sequence of a K-2 symbol length. The encoded symbol stream is decoded using an orthogonal function generator driven by a K-2 binary counter to generate all possible symbol sequences for comparison with each received symbol sequence. The output of the comparison is Viterbi decoded to provide the original stream of information bits. Corresponding methods of encoding the information bits and decoding of the symbol sequences are included.
