In a network virtualization system, metadata is passed in an encapsulation header from one network virtualization edge to another network virtualization edge or to a service connected to a network virtualization edge. The metadata may carry packet processing instructions, diagnostic information, hop-specific information, or a packet identifier. Using the metadata information in the packet header, the datacenter network may provide services such as remote segmentation offload, small packet coalescing, transparent packet compression, and end-to-end packet tracing.

In one or more implementations, functionality is exposed through one or more application programming interfaces (APIs) that is accessible to a plurality of applications of the computing device to perform network communication. In one or more implementations, a determination is made by an operating system that network traffic associated with one or more applications of the computing device has completed. In one or more implementations, network traffic received by a network interface device of a computing device is monitored and a traffic pattern is recognized in the monitored network traffic. Techniques and apparatuses for providing power-aware thread scheduling and dynamic use of processors are disclosed. In some aspects, a multi-core system is monitored to determine core activity. The core activity may be compared to a power policy that balances a power savings plan with a performance plan. One or more of the cores may be parked in response to the comparison to reduce power consumption by the multi-core system. In additional aspects, the power-aware scheduling may be performed during a predetermined interval to dynamically park or unpark cores. Further aspects include adjusting the power state of unparked cores in response to the comparison of the core activity and power policy.

Power-aware thread scheduling and dynamic use of processors

A network interface that connects a computing device to a network may be configured to process incoming packets and determine an action to take with respect to each packet, thus decreasing processing demands on a processor of the computing device. The action may be indicating the packet to an operating system of the computing device immediately, storing the packet in a queue of one or more queues or discarding the packet. When the processor is interrupted, multiple packets aggregated on the network interface may be indicated to the operating system all at once to increase the device's power efficiency. Hardware of the network interface may be programmed to process the packets using filter criteria specified by the operating system based on information gathered by the operating system, such as firewall rules.

Systems, methods, and computer storage media are described herein that configure a switch extension associated with a virtual switch with one or more settings. In response to the configuring, the systems, methods, and computer storage media persist the one or more settings and apply the persisted one or more settings to a target switch extension of a target virtual switch. The systems, methods, and computer storage media receive the settings through a management interface. Also, the systems, methods, and computer storage media receive requests for information associated with the switch extension and provide the switch extension information in response.

Unified policy management for extensible virtual switches

Techniques for transparently replacing a processor, that receives interrupts in a partitioned computing device, with a replacement processor, are disclosed. In at least some embodiments, methods are discussed for directing the interrupts to an unchangeable identifier mapped to the processor's identifier and replacing the processor with the replacement processor. An intermediary, such as an I/O APIC, is used for storing the unchangeable identifier. The mapping may use logical mode delivery, physical mode delivery, or interrupt mapping.
