A system for testing braking and steering systems of a vehicle includes a steering actuator to cause rotation of the steering wheel and electropneumatic modules associated with each wheel brake that include a solenoid controlling fluid communication between a brake actuator of the wheel brake and one of a fluid source and atmosphere. A controller transmits a first control signal to an electropneumatic module associated with a wheel brake on one side of the vehicle to actuate the solenoid of the electropneumatic module. The controller transmits a second control signal to the steering actuator to cause rotation of the steering wheel during actuation of the solenoid of the electropneumatic module and in a rotational direction towards the same side of the vehicle.

System and method for testing vehicle brake and steering systems

Vehicle brake performance monitoring is provided. The braking capabilities are dynamically learned or otherwise calculated or determined in each vehicle and shared between the vehicles of the platoon. The platoon may be reorganized based on differences between the learned or otherwise calculated or determined relative braking capabilities. Desired gaps between the platooning vehicles may be modified in accordance with the learned or otherwise calculated or determined relative braking capabilities as necessary or desired. During every vehicle stop, the vehicle and axle loads together with information on the time from brake apply to when the vehicle decelerates is monitored and entered as a data point defining the vehicle response delay. The axle loads and the ABS Activation of a wheel end for a given pressure is further selectively used to create another data point. The data points are selectively used to develop overall performance (e.g., quality score) of the brake system.

Brake performance monitoring for vehicle platooning operation

A platoon management control uses the GPS position of the rear of a lead vehicle. The lead vehicle deceleration demand is overlaid upon the position of the rear of the lead vehicle. The following vehicle uses its own GPS position along with the radar or vision system of the following vehicle to determine the rear of the lead vehicle. When a lead vehicle's deceleration signal is subtracted from the position of the rear of the forward vehicle as determined by the following vehicle, the deceleration profile must be within an acceptable window to be valid. Also, one or more local sensors on adjacent platooning vehicles are used to communicate encoding scheme selection information and also to communicate the deceleration command signals. This permits the following vehicle to decode the deceleration command signals using a decoding scheme corresponding to the encoding scheme indicated as being used by the leading vehicle.

Sensor-based anti-hacking prevention in platooning vehicles

A controller comprises an electronic communication line configured to receive a system brake request control signal representing a requested system brake application and an identified urgency. A hardware processor, configured to perform a predefined set of basic operations in response to receiving the system brake request control signal, is capable of: determining a maximum braking pressure to be applied during the system braking application based on the identified urgency; generating a first system brake mode control signal, based on the determined maximum braking pressure, to set an associated first valve to a first valve state; generating a second system brake mode control signal, based on the determined maximum braking pressure, to set an associated second valve to a second valve state, the maximum braking pressure during the system braking application being set by the first valve state and the second valve state; determining an activation profile for an associated modulator based on the determined maximum braking pressure; the controller transmitting, via the electronic communication line, the first system brake mode control signal, the second system brake mode control signal and modulator control signals according to the activation profile.

System and method for controlling an automated braking application

A braking controller and method in a towing vehicle towing one or more towed vehicles as a combination vehicle provides brake control of the one or more towed vehicles based on a level of braking force applied to the towing vehicle. A non-enhanced braking mode applies a first level of braking force to the towed vehicles in a predetermined reduced proportion relative to the level of braking force applied to the towing vehicle, and an enhanced braking mode applies a second level of braking force to the towed vehicles greater than the first level of braking force. A controller deceleration command input receives a deceleration command signal which is compared against predetermined threshold deceleration rate value or against a current deceleration value being executed by the combination vehicle and, based on a result of the comparisons, either the enhanced or the non-enhanced braking modes are implemented by the controller.

Towing vehicle controller using trailer braking strategy and trailer braking control method

Systems and methods are provided for platoon initialization, redundant lane departure control, and redundant communication operation. A platooning initiation strategy requires continuous communication between vehicles for a more than a pre-defined duration, a demonstration of an operable brake light on the leading vehicle, and command control profile compatibility between the vehicles before allowing the vehicles to mutually platoon or to join an existing platoon. A set of computer readable labels visible to a Lane Departure System placed on a lead vehicle are used by a following vehicle when lane markings become invisible to sensors. A redundant brake lamp operable in a non-visible spectrum is provided for platooning. A specific brake lamp for use exclusively for platooning purposes may be provided.

Initialization and safety maintenance strategy for platooning vehicles

Inter-vehicle platoon distance management is provided. Parameters relating to external conditions are used together with vehicle physical characteristics, performance information, and other factors to select an optimized distance between vehicle pairs traveling as a platoon. The parameters relating to the external conditions are aggregated by the following vehicle of the platoon vehicle pair, and used to adjust or otherwise modify a predetermined minimum following distance parameter. This allows flexibility in the platooning control to follow at different distances while maintaining an overall fuel economy benefit of the platoon. When no external condition restrictions exist, the platoon vehicles follow at the shortest distance to maximize fuel economy. However, as the aggregated external conditions increase, the platooning distance is extended to improve safety while preserving as much fuel economy benefit of the platoon as possible.

Varying the distance between vehicles in a platoon

A controller is adapted to receive signals indicative of an image including a representation of a posted speed limit for a current section of a road on which an associated vehicle is traveling. The controller evaluates the image to identify the posted speed limit and dynamically determines if the posted speed limit is above a predetermined threshold speed limit. Only if the posted speed limit is above the predetermined threshold speed limit, the controller sets the identified posted speed limit as a warning threshold. If a speed of the associated vehicle is more than a predetermined range over the warning threshold, the controller transmits a warning signal to a notifier for notifying an operator of the associated vehicle and controls a speed of the vehicle based on the posted speed limit.

System and method for providing a speed warning and speed control

When employing an adaptive cruise-with-braking (ACB) system to control host vehicle braking reaction distance, a plurality of trigger conditions (e.g., environmental parameters) are monitored. If one or more of the monitored parameters exceeds a predefined threshold, a trigger event is detected, and at least one of a braking reaction distance (BRD) and a following distance limit shape (FDLS) are adjusted. The BRD and FDLS adjustments may be predefined according to the type and/or magnitude of the trigger event. Trigger events may be weighted or prioritized such that higher priority trigger event types correspond to larger BRD reductions, etc. Monitored trigger conditions may include adverse weather, dangerous road terrain or topography, high traffic density, erratic forward vehicle behavior, and the like.

ACC and AM braking range variable based on internal and external factors

When employing an adaptive cruise-with-braking (ACB) system to control host vehicle braking reaction distance, a following distance limit shape (FDLS) is defined using a lateral offset function, and a lateral offset of a forward vehicle is detected and analyzed. If the vehicle has a lateral offset greater than a lateral offset defined by the lateral offset function, deceleration requests from an engine controller are limited to requesting deceleration by an engine retarder and/or a dethrottling module. If the lateral offset of the forward vehicle is less than a lateral offset defined by the lateral offset function, foundation brakes may be requested. In other embodiments, road curvature is determined, and a braking reaction distance is reduced when the radius of curvature is smaller than a threshold curvature, in order to reduce false positive braking reactions triggered by, e.g., a forward vehicle on an exit ramp while the host vehicle remains on the highway.
