An alkylaromatic sulfonate is disclosed wherein the alkyl group contains a distribution of alkyl chain lengths which comprise greater than 15 weight percent and up to about 35 weight percent of Cto C. Also disclosed is a process for preparing an alkylaromatic sulfonate and its use in recovering crude oil from a subterranean hydrocarbon containing formation.

The present invention is directed to an isomerized alpha olefin sulfonate and a method of making the same wherein the isomerized alpha olefin sulfonate is derived from sulfonating an isomerized alpha olefin with sulfur trioxide in the presence of air thereby producing an isomerized alpha olefin sulfonic acid, wherein the isomerized alpha olefin is derived from the isomerization of C-Cnormal alpha olefins; and neutralizing the isomerized alpha olefin sulfonic acid with a source of an alkali metal or ammonium or substituted ammonium ion.

Methods and apparatus for prilling are provided which include dynamically controlling the pressure at the prill head for increased control over prill quality and size distribution. In one embodiment, the pressure of a headspace above a volume of liquid or slurry is regulated to maintain a more precise control of the pressure of the liquid or slurry at the prill head. A process for preparing an alkylaryl sulfonate comprising (a) reacting at least one meta-xylene compound with olefin or a mixture of olefins having from about 10 to about 20 carbon atoms, in the presence of an acid catalyst, wherein the resulting product comprises no more than 40 weight percent of 1-alkyl-2,4 dimethylsubstituted aromatic compound and at least about 60 weight percent of 1-alkyl-3,5 dimethyl substituted aromatic compound; (b) sulfonating the product of (a); and (c) neutralizing the product of (b) with a source of alkali or alkaline earth metal or ammonia.
