Fluid containing Ionic molecules is supplied to a location between the internal electrode and the external electrodes and an electric field radiating outwardly from the internal electrode to the external electrodes is created so that said fluid flows outwardly away from said internal electrode into the tissue to be treated.

The invention provides a method for effecting a catheter exchange by cutting a catheter perpendicularly to it's axis and maintaining a grip on a guidewire while the cut end of the catheter is withdrawn rearwardly over the guidewire's distal end. A vascular flow measurement catheter device for measuring total volumetric flow through a vessel includes a flow-measurement catheter having a full flow lumen of known cross sectional geometry provided with a relatively short distal measurement segment with inlet and outlet ports positioned to carry the full flow of the vessel in the manner of a segment of the vessel itself when the outer catheter is positioned in the vessel of interest. An ultrasonic transducer system is mounted in the flow-measurement catheter for communicating the velocity of the fluid in the measurement segment of the full flow lumen and for determining the total volumetric flow. An obturator catheter is provided in coaxial relation to the lumen of the flow-measurement catheter and adapted to travel along and within or without the full flow lumen of the measurement catheter to function to shut off the flow through the measurement catheter when advanced over inlet or outlet ports of the measurement catheter.

A guide catheter for use in coronary angioplasty, atherectomy and other cardiovascular interventions is provided with a side port having a one-way valve arrangement which permits the flow of aortic blood into the catheter lumen and out of the distal orifice of the catheter yet which closes in response to pressure injection of a liquid through the lumen of the catheter, such as injection of radiopaque contrast liquid. The valve element may be in the form of a thin flexible film constructed to be substantially immediately responsive to light pressure differentials across the valve element.
