A method of preventing or reducing the occurrence of Low Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI) in a direct-injected, boosted, spark-ignited internal combustion engine that, in operation, generates a break mean effective pressure level of greater than about 15 bar, at an engine speed of from about 1500 to about 2500 rotations per minute (rpm), in which the crankcase of the engine is lubricated with a lubricating oil composition containing at least about 0.2 mass % of magnesium sulfated ash.

Lubricating oil compositions

A lubricating oil composition having a total base number of at least about 8, comprising a major amount of oil of lubricating viscosity; an amount of one or more dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphate metal salt introducing into the lubricating oil composition no more than 0.06 wt. % of phosphorus; at least 1.2 wt. % of hindered phenol antioxidant; and boron, and/or a boron-containing compound or compounds in an amount providing the lubricating oil composition with at least 200 ppm by weight of boron, all weight percentages being based on the total weight of the lubricating oil composition.

Soot induced kinematic viscosity increase of lubricating oil compositions for diesel engines equipped with EGR systems can be ameliorated by selection of viscosity modifier, lubricating oil flow improvers, detergents and/or dispersants.

Soot induced kinematic viscosity increase of lubricating oil compositions for heavy duty diesel engines equipped with EGR systems operating in a condensing mode can be ameliorated by selection of viscosity modifier, lubricating oil flow improvers, detergents and dispersants.

EGR equipped diesel engines and lubricating oil compositions

Concentrates for lubricating oil compositions are prepared by mixing at elevated temperature: (i) at least one high molecular weight ashless dispersant; (ii) at least one oil-soluble overbased metal detergent; and (iii) at least one surface-active agent comprising a low molecular weight hydroxyl or amine group.
