Tunable cylindrical lenses and head-mounted display including the same

This disclosure describes in-plane switching mode liquid crystal geometric phase tunable lenses that can be integrated into an eyepiece of an optical device for the correction of non-emmetropic vision, such as in an augmented reality display system. The eyepiece can include an integrated, field-configurable optic arranged with respect to a waveguide used to project digital imagery to the user, the optic being capable of providing a tunable Rx for the user including variable spherical refractive power (SPH), cylinder refractive power, and cylinder axis values. In certain configuration, each tunable eyepiece includes two variable compound lenses: one on the user-side of the waveguide with variable SPH, cylinder power, and axis values; and a second on the world side of the waveguide with variable SPH.

Optical devices and head-mounted displays employing tunable cylindrical lenses

An augmented reality system includes a light source to generate a virtual light beam, the virtual light beam carrying information for a virtual object. The system also includes a light guiding optical element, the light guiding optical element allowing a first portion of a first real-world light beam to pass therethrough, where the virtual light beam enters the light guiding optical element, propagates through the light guiding optical element by substantially total internal reflection (TIR), and exits the light guiding optical element. The system further includes a lens disposed adjacent and exterior to a surface of the light guiding optical element, the lens comprising a light modulating mechanism to absorb a second portion of the real-world light beam and to allow the first portion of the real-world light to pass through the lens.

Systems and methods for external light management

An eye tracking system can include a first camera configured to capture a first plurality of visual data of a right eye at a first sampling rate. The system can include a second camera configured to capture a second plurality of visual data of a left eye at a second sampling rate. The second plurality of visual data can be captured during different sampling times than the first plurality of visual data. The system can estimate, based on at least some visual data of the first and second plurality of visual data, visual data of at least one of the right or left eye at a sampling time during which visual data of an eye for which the visual data is being estimated are not being captured. Eye movements of the eye based on at least some of the estimated visual data and at least some visual data of the first or second plurality of visual data can be determined.

Eye tracking using alternate sampling

Disclosed are dimming assemblies and display systems for reducing artifacts produced by optically-transmissive displays. A system may include a substrate upon which a plurality of electronic components are disposed. The electronic components may include a plurality of pixels, a plurality of conductors, and a plurality of circuit modules. The plurality of pixels may be arranged in a two-dimensional array, with each pixel having a two-dimensional geometry corresponding to a shape with at least one curved side. The plurality of conductors may be arranged adjacent to the plurality of pixels. The system may also include control circuitry electrically coupled to the plurality of conductors. The control circuitry may be configured to apply electrical signals to the plurality of circuit modules by way of the plurality of conductors.

Geometries for mitigating artifacts in see-through pixel arrays

A wearable display system includes one or more emissive micro-displays, e.g., micro-LED displays. The micro-displays may be monochrome micro-displays or full-color micro-displays. The micro-displays may include arrays of light emitters. Light collimators may be utilized to narrow the angular emission profile of light emitted by the light emitters. Where a plurality of emissive micro-displays is utilized, the micro-displays may be positioned at different sides of an optical combiner, e.g., an X-cube prism which receives light rays from different micro-displays and outputs the light rays from the same face of the cube. The optical combiner directs the light to projection optics, which outputs the light to an eyepiece that relays the light to a user's eye. The eyepiece may output the light to the user's eye with different amounts of wavefront divergence, to place virtual content on different depth planes.

Virtual and augmented reality display systems with emissive micro-displays

A wearable display system includes a light projection system having one or more emissive microdisplays, e.g., micro-LED displays. The light projection system projects time-multiplexed left-eye and right-eye images, which pass through an optical router having a polarizer and a switchable polarization rotator. The optical router is synchronized with the generation of images by the light projection system to impart a first polarization to left-eye images and a second different polarization to right-eye images. Light of the first polarization is incoupled into an eyepiece having one or more waveguides for outputting light to one of the left and right eyes, while light of the second polarization may be incoupled into another eyepiece having one or more waveguides for outputting light to the other of the left and right eyes. Each eyepiece may output incoupled light with variable amounts of wavefront divergence, to elicit different accommodation responses from the user's eyes.

Augmented and virtual reality display systems with shared display for left and right eyes

Embodiments shifts the color fields of a rendered image frame based on the eye tracking data (e.g. position of the user's pupils). An MR device obtains a first image frame having a set of color fields. The first image frame corresponds to a first position of the pupils of the viewer. The MR device then determines a second position of the pupils of the viewer based on, for example, data receive from an eye tracking device coupled to the MR device. The MR device generates, based on the first image frame, a second image frame corresponding to the second position of the pupils. The second image frame is generated by shifting color fields by a shift value based on the second position of the pupils of the viewer. The MR device transmits the second image frame to a display device of the MR device to be displayed thereon.

Warping for spatial light modulating displays using eye tracking

Embodiments transform an image frame based on a position of pupils of a viewer to eliminate visual artefacts formed on an image frame displayed on a scanning-type display device. An MR system obtains a first image frame corresponding to a first view perspective associated with a first pupil position. The system receives data from an eye tracking device, determines a second pupil position, and generates a second image frame corresponding to a second view perspective associated with the second pupil position. A first set of pixels of the second image frame are shifted by a first shift value, and a second set of pixels of the second image frame are shifted by a second shift value, where the shift values are calculated based on at least the second pupil position. The system transmits the second image frame to a near-eye display device to be displayed thereon.
