Briefly, embodiments of methods and/or systems for tomographic imaging are disclosed. In an example embodiment, optical measurements may be obtained for at least a portion of an illuminated object at a plurality of focal positions between the illuminated object and an imaging lens and at a plurality of angular orientations. Rotated representations of the optical measurements may be projected onto a coordinate plane in which in-focus and out-of-focus rotated representations of the optical measurements may form a cross-sectional image of the illuminated portion of the object.

The output modal content of optical fibers that contain more than one spatial mode may be analyzed and quantified by measuring interference between co-propagating modes in the optical fiber. By spatially resolving the interference, an image of the spatial beat pattern between two modes may be constructed, thereby providing information about the modes supported by the optical fiber. Measurements of the phase front exiting the optical fiber under test are advantageously performed in the far field.

Measuring modal content of multi-moded fibers

Subject matter disclosed herein relates to measuring optical fibers or measuring devices comprising optical fibers and, in particular, to measuring a variation of refractive index of an optical fiber as a function of position and wavelength.

When transmitting in higher-order modes (HOMs), the chances of dielectric breakdown in the bulk glass can be reduced by judicious selection of the mode of transmission. Since energy distributions in the HOM profile change with the mode order, one can calculate the peak intensity for any given HOM. Correspondingly, one can calculate whether any portion of the transmitted pulse will exceed the breakdown threshold for the optical fiber through which the HOM signal is being transmitted. Should the calculated energy exceed the dielectric breakdown threshold, another HOM with a lower peak intensity can be selected for signal transmission. Disclosed are systems and methods for selecting an appropriate HOM to reduce the likelihood of dielectric breakdown.

Preventing dielectric breakdown in optical fibers

An all-fiber optical pulse compression arrangement comprises a concatenated arrangement of a section of input fiber (e.g., a single mode fiber), a graded-index (GRIN) fiber lens and a section of pulse-compressing fiber (e.g., LMA fiber). The GRIN fiber lens is used to provide mode matching between the input fiber (supporting the propagation of chirped optical pulses) and the pulse-compressing fiber, with efficient pulse compression occurring along the length of the LMA fiber. The dispersion and length of the LMA fiber section are selected to provide the desired degree of pulse compression; for example, capable of reconstituting a femtosecond pulse as is used in supercontinuum generation systems.

A fiber amplifier suitable for high power, narrow linewidth applications exhibits suppression of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) by segmenting the fiber amplifier into separate portions that exhibit different Brillouin center frequencies. By changing the center frequencies in adjoining segments of the fiber amplifier, the backward-propagating Stokes signal is essentially blocked, and SBS is suppressed. In a preferred embodiment the segmentation is added to the terminating portion of the fiber amplifier. Various techniques, including temperature modifications, can be used to impart the desired center frequency shift.

Suppression of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in high power fiber amplifiers

A large mode area optical fiber is configured to support multiple transverse modes of signal radiation within its core region. The fiber is a hybrid design that includes at least two axial segments having different characteristics. In a first axial segment the transverse refractive index profile inside the core is not radially uniform being characterized by a radial dip in refractive index. The first segment supports more than one transverse mode. In a second axial segment the transverse refractive index profile inside the core is more uniform than that of the first segment. The two segments are adiabatically coupled to one another. Illustratively, the second segment is a terminal portion of the fiber which facilitates coupling to other components. In one embodiment, in the first segment M&#x3e;1.0, and in the second segment M&#x3c;&#x3c;M. In a preferred embodiment, M&#x3e;&#x3e;1.0 and M&#x2dc;1.0. In another embodiment, the optical fiber is coupled to a fiber stub.

Large-mode-area, multimode, hybrid optical fibers and devices using same

The specification describes optical fiber designs that overcome the problem of self-induced damage to optical fibers due to excessive self-focusing. The refractive index of these fiber designs is grossly non-uniform in the center core of the optical fiber. In one embodiment, the optical fiber is designed with a deliberate and steep core trench. In addition, the nominal core region of these optical fibers has a very large area. The combination of these two properties restricts a large portion of the optical power envelope to a core ring, with reduced optical power inside the core ring. These designs substantially reduce self-focusing in the optical fiber. Photonic systems employing optical fibers having these modified core designs are expected to be especially effective for transmitting high power, e.g., greater than 1 MW, with short pulse duration.

Optical fibers for high power applications

A coupling waveguide is interconnected between a launching fiber and a receiving fiber to reduce coupling loss. The coupling waveguide includes an integrally formed graded index lens having a non-parabolic refractive index profile. The graded index lens receives as an input a coupling mode field of an optical signal launched by the launching fiber and transforms the coupling mode field into a transverse spatial distribution matching a corresponding coupling mode field of the receiving fiber.
