A fibrillated blend of lyocell and cellulosic pulp having a degree of polymerization of 200 to 1000 as measured by ASTM Test 1795-96, a method of making the blend and materials which incorporate the blend.

Fibrillated blend of lyocell low DP pulp

A mixture of lyocell fiber and low DP or standard DP cellulose pulp fiber having a Canadian Standard Freeness of 250 mL CSF or less is dried and has a Canadian Standard Freeness of 250 mL CSF or less. The pulp is 10% to 75% of the total weight of fibers in the mixture. Both the dried product and the process of making it are disclosed.

Dried highly fibrillated cellulose fiber

A cellulose pulp sheet is provided that is formed from never-dried kraft pulp and fibrillated fibers, such as lyocell. The pulp sheet provides several beneficial features as a result of both the use of fibrillated fibers and never-dried kraft pulp, particularly when the pulp sheet is used to form air-laid absorbent materials that include superabsorbent polymers.

Pulp and fibrillated fiber composite

A process for making a fibrillated blend of lyocell and cellulose pulp fibers in which a blend of lyocell and cellulose pulp fibers is provided. The lyocell is from 25% to 75% of the total weight of the blend of lyocell and cellulose pulp fibers. The blend is refined in a high shear field device to provide a blend of fibrillated lyocell and pulp fibers having a diameter of 10 to 500 nanometers and a fiber length of 50 to 500 &#x3bc;m. The high shear field device can be a homogenizer or colloid mill.
