An electroluminescent display includes a display substrate, a plurality of patterned first electrodes formed over the display substrate, one or more layers of light-emitting material formed over the plurality of first electrodes, at least one second electrode formed over the one or more layers of light-emitting material, and a plurality of chiplets. Each chiplet is electrically connected to a first electrode. Each chiplet further includes a light detector and a light emitter separate from the one-or-more layers of light-emitting material connected to the chiplet circuitry. The chiplet circuitry includes a modulating circuit for modulating light emitted by the light emitter and a demodulating circuit for demodulating light detected by the light detector so that light emitted by the light emitter of a first chiplet is received by the light detector of a second chiplet.

Electroluminescent display device with optically communicating chiplets

An apparatus for displaying and sensing images includes a display substrate and a plurality of electroluminescent pixels. A plurality of pixel control chiplets and one or more sensor chiplets are affixed to the device side of the display substrate in the display area. A transparent cover is spaced apart from and affixed to the device side of the display substrate, and has a plurality of imaging lenses formed on or in it, each imaging lens spaced apart from and corresponding to an image sensor array in a sensor chiplet for forming an imaging plane on the corresponding image sensor array.

A method of controlling a passive matrix display having rows and columns of pixels including receiving an input image signal; determining drive signals for at least a first image field and a second image field; calculating a value that is correlated to a change in the total capacitive charge of the pixels that will occur between the display of the first image field and the second image field for at least one column of the passive-matrix, electro-luminescent display; adjusting at least one of the drive signals within first or second image fields to compensate for the change in total capacitive charge; and providing adjusted drive signals for each pixel.

A top-emitting OLED device, comprising: one or more OLEDs formed on a substrate; a light-scattering layer formed over the one or more OLEDs; a transparent cover; one or more color filters formed on the transparent cover; a color-conversion material layer formed over the color filters, or formed over or integral with the light-scattering layer; wherein the substrate is aligned and affixed to the transparent cover so that the locations of the color filters and color conversion material correspond to the location of the OLEDs, and the color-conversion material layer, color filters, and the light-scattering layer are between the cover and substrate, and a low-index gap is formed between the light-scattering layer and the color filters, with no light-scattering layer being positioned between the color conversion material layer and the low-index gap, wherein the color-conversion material layer is formed integrally with the light-scattering layer.

A tiled, passive-matrix, EL display, including two or more EL tiles, each EL tile including an array of rows and columns of light-emitting elements, each light-emitting element being formed from a light-emitting layer that is sandwiched between an orthogonal array of row and column electrodes wherein each of the two or more EL tiles further include at least one row driver; at least one column driver for operating in conjunction with each of the at least one row drivers to control the flow of electrons between the row and column electrodes to control the emission of light from each of the light-emitting elements, with a first exception that when the boundary between the two tiles is to be illuminated, then the number of rows of simultaneously illuminated rows of light-emitting elements within one tile is less than the predetermined number.

Top-emitting OLED device with light-scattering layer and color-conversion

A passive matrix, electro-luminescent display system has a passive matrix, electro-luminescent display having an orthogonally oriented array of column and row electrodes and an electro-luminescent layer located between the electrodes at the intersection of each column and row electrode forming an individual light-emitting element. Drivers provide separate signals at different times to different groups of row electrodes within the array of row electrodes; wherein the row electrodes of each group simultaneously receive at least two different level signals. A display driver receives and processes the input image signal to provide a presharpened image control signal. Column drivers respond to the presharpened image control signal for simultaneously providing a signal to the multiple column electrodes within the array of column electrodes at the same time signals are provided to the groups of row electrodes so that the concurrence of row and column signals causes individual light-emitting element to produce light.

Passive matrix electro-luminescent display system

A top-emitting OLED device, comprising: one or more OLEDs formed on a substrate; a light-scattering layer formed over the one or more OLEDs; a transparent cover; one or more color filters formed on the transparent cover; a color-conversion material layer formed over the color filters, or formed over or integral with the light-scattering layer; wherein the substrate is aligned and affixed to the transparent cover so that the locations of the color filters and color conversion material correspond to the location of the OLEDs, and the color-conversion material layer, color filters, and the light-scattering layer are between the cover and substrate, and a low-index gap is formed between the light-scattering layer and the color filters, with no light-scattering layer being positioned between the color conversion material layer and the low-index gap.

A color display device, comprising: an array of subpixels of at least four different colors, including at least two relatively higher luminous color subpixels and at least two relatively lower luminous color subpixels, wherein the subpixels are arranged into groups forming at least two distinct types of pixels, each pixel type including the two relatively higher luminous color subpixels and at least one of the two relatively lower luminous color subpixels, and wherein the pixel types are arranged in a pattern such that the relative locations of the two relatively higher luminous color subpixels in each pixel is repeated in adjacent pixels, and the relative location of at least one of the two relatively lower luminance color subpixels is not repeated in at least one adjacent pixel. Various embodiments of the invention enable color display devices with improved image display quality, with both the appearance of jagged lines and the appearance of banding reduced simultaneously.

Color display device with enhanced pixel pattern

A passive-matrix pixel light emitting display structure and a method of making same. The display structure includes display area formed on a substrate. A set of busses is provided over the substrate that extends from an edge of the substrates across a predetermined portion of the substrate. An insulating layer is provided over the busses so that only the electrode pad and the end adjacent the edge of the bus is exposed. At least three sets of first electrode segments are located over the entire display area, each set of first electrode segments extending for only a portion of the length of the substrate and each of the first electrode segments designed to be active in a different portion of the display area. One or more layers of materials wherein at least one of which comprises light-emissive materials, is located over the first electrode segments. At least three sets of second electrode segments are located over the one or more layers of organic materials and entire display area and each set of the second electrode segments being designed to be active in a different portion of the display area. One of the three sets of second electrode segments being in contact with the exposed electrode busses, each of the first set of first electrode segments being associated with one set of the three sets of second electrode segments so as to form a plurality of display segments in the display area.

Tiled OLED display

An OLED display system includes a) an OLED display including an array of light emitting pixels, each pixel having a plurality of OLEDs for emitting different colors of light specifying a gamut wherein one of the OLEDs has a power efficiency or lifetime different from the power efficiency or lifetime of at least one of the other OLEDs; b) a control signal; and c) a display driver for receiving a color display signal representing a relative luminance and color to be produced for each pixel of the display and generating a converted color display signal for driving the OLEDs in the display, wherein the display driver is responsive to the control signal for controlling the color gamut saturation of light produced by the OLEDs to reduce power consumption or increase lifetime of at least one of the OLEDs.

Color OLED display system having improved performance

An OLED display device includes: an array of light emitting pixels, each pixel having red, green, and blue OLEDs and at least one additional colored OLED that expands the gamut of the display device relative to the gamut defined by the red, green and blue OLEDs, wherein the luminance efficiency or the luminance stability over time of the additional OLED is higher than the luminance efficiency or the luminance stability over time of at least one of the red, green, and blue OLEDs; and means for selectively driving the OLEDs with a drive signal to reduce overall power usage or extend the lifetime of the display while maintaining display color accuracy. In accordance with various embodiments, the present invention provides a color display device with improved power efficiency, longer overall lifetime, expanded color gamut with accurate hues, and improved spatial image quality.

Color OLED display with improved power efficiency

An organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display having addressable pixels on a substrate, the pixels having performance attributes, and a control circuit for controlling the pixels of the display device, includes one or more OLED pixels; an OLED reference pixel located on a substrate and connected to the control circuit, the OLED reference pixel having the same performance attributes as the one or more OLED pixels, the OLED reference pixel having a voltage sensing circuit including a transistor connected to one of the terminals of the OLED reference pixel for sensing the voltage across the OLED reference pixel to produce a voltage signal representing the voltage across the OLED reference pixel; a measurement circuit connected to the voltage signal to produce an output signal representative of the performance attributes of the OLED reference pixel; an analysis circuit connected to the measurement circuit to receive the output signal, compare the performance attributes with predetermined performance attributes, and produce a feedback signal in response thereto; and the control circuit being responsive to the feedback signal to compensate for changes in the output of the OLED pixels.

An OLED device, comprising, a first layer of independently addressable light emitting elements; and a second layer of independently addressable light emitting elements located on top of the first layer; wherein one of the first and second layers of independently addressable light emitting elements comprises a patterned array of red and blue light emitting elements, and the other of the first and second layers of independently addressable light emitting elements comprises an array of green light emitting elements.

A method of selecting an OLED device to be manufactured based on customer requirements, including the customer providing first and second sets of requirements, providing a plurality of OLED device constructions based on the first and second sets of requirements, device architecture options, and a database including device component performance information. The method also includes providing a number of performance parameters of each of the device constructions, determining, based upon the second set of requirements, a figure of merit term comprising two or more parameters and including the importance of those parameters, and using the figure of merit term to calculate a figure of merit for the possible OLED device constructions.
