A facility for providing enhanced time-sensitive notifications on an electronic device is described. In some such notifications, the facility replaces an icon or name of an application presenting the notification with another image or other text, respectively. In some such notifications, the facility renders certain aspects of the notification on an optional basis, such as based on the capabilities of the electronic device.

Enhanced notifications

Resources used by a foreground process associated with an application as well as one or more background tasks associated with the application that are running as separate processes on the computing device are tracked. Historical data relating to resource usage by the application is utilized to predict a resource usage amount for the application which is then stored. A subsequent launch of the application can be conditioned upon whether the predicted resource usage amount is available. If the predicted resource usage amount is available, it can be allocated to the application and the application can be launched. If the application then exceeds the predicted resource usage amount, other processes executing concurrently therewith may be terminated to free up the resource. Regardless of how the application performs, new resource usage data is obtained for the application, which is then used to adjust the predicted resource usage amount.

Resource management based on device-specific or user-specific resource usage profiles

Methods, systems, and computer program products are provided that enable a first application (i.e., a caller application) to call a second application (i.e., a callee application) to perform a function in a manner such that the first application may be dehydrated during the call. Dehydrating includes terminating execution of an instance of the first application, and freeing memory space in a memory of a mobile device that stored the instance of the first application. In such case, the second application may be active while the first application is no longer present in memory. The second application is enabled to respond to the call, causing the first application to be rehydrated. The first application continues execution at a location where the first application was dehydrated, and receives the response to the call.

Application dehydration and rehydration during application-to-application calls

Techniques are described that enable an application executing on a computing device to dynamically control how an allocated portion of a resource of the computing device is to be divided among multiple processes associated with the application. For example, an application executing on the computing device may interact with an operating system of the computing device to dynamically control how an allocated portion of a resource of the computing device is to be divided among a foreground process associated with the application and one or more background processes associated with the application.

Dynamic resource management for multi-process applications

This document describes techniques for, and apparatuses capable of, provider-specific parsing for content retrieval. In one embodiment, a user's computing device receives code (e.g., an executable script) from a content provider and utilizes a parsing scheme associated with the content provider to parse the code and determine an address that can be used to retrieve an instance of content. The instance of content can then be retrieved using the address and without executing the code. In some embodiments, the parsing scheme is specific to the content provider and can be updated based on a change to the code.

Provider-specific parsing for content retrieval

Request data is generated at a client device having at least one managed copy client application. The request data includes an identifier (e.g., a uniform resource locator, class ID, etc.) for an integration control (e.g., an ActiveX control, Java applet, etc.) installable on the client device. The request data is transmitted and, in response to the request data, response data (e.g., an object element in an HTML page) is received from a server (e.g., an e-commerce server). The response data facilitates installation of the integration control on the client device, and the integration control provides an interface to facilitate communication between the server and the managed copy client application.

Decoupled mechanism for managed copy client applications and e-commerce servers to interoperate in a heterogeneous environment

Various embodiments allow for managed copies of multimedia content to be made by end users. The managed copy process can ensure that end users can make legitimate and controlled copies of content while, at the same time, give content producers the ability to control and authorize such copies.

Protocol for managed copy of media content

A validation tool providing real-time validation of interactive content applications includes a static analysis engine that extrapolates the timeline of an application and the application's behavior over that timeline. The static analysis engine watches various types of data associated with the application's markup document and works through an editor to inform the user if the application has exceeded defined limits as the application is being built. The validation tool is further configured with a dynamic simulator that is arranged as a state machine that shares state information with the static analysis engine to enable the validation tool to display useful information such as pixel buffer usage at a given time code. The validation tool is further configured to provide a real-time application preview with which the user may interact to immediately evaluate cause and effect of any changes that are made in the application code using the editor.

Real-time validation of interactive applications

An interactive multimedia presentation playable by a presentation system includes a media content component and an interactive content component. The interactive content component includes one or more applications, which provide instructions for organizing, formatting, and synchronizing the presentation of interactive objects to a user. Prior to playing the interactive multimedia presentation, an entity responsible for authoring or publishing one or more of the applications is digitally identified and authenticated, or it is determined that the applications are unsigned. Prior to and/or during play of the interactive multimedia presentation, authorization for performing certain actions (such as executing certain application instructions, especially those that access functionality of the presentation system, computer-readable media, or external networks) is granted via a permission-based model. User input and application requests may be considered in determining whether an application is granted permission to perform certain actions.

Advanced content authentication and authorization

Provided are arrangements for downloading resources and managing downloaded resources. A file is requested from a HTTP server, the file associated with an original URI. The file is downloaded and assigned a handle. The file is then stored in a storage location such as a file cache or in a persistent storage location. Upon command of an advanced content playlist or sequence, the file is called by calling the handle of the file. The storing of the file may include storing the file in a location where the file is subject to an automatic removal operation. The file may be an image file or any other type of file, especially multimedia files. The automatic removal operation may occur upon a quitting or restarting of the application. If another request is made for another file, the prior downloaded file may be replaced.

Arrangement for anonymous API downloaded resources for advanced content

A programming model that takes general purpose APIs and machine-generates new programming models based on user defined schemas that provide the developer with data and view separation, and a way to communicate to the host application using the domain of the problem being solved. The system comprises a schema component that the developer uses to define a schema that includes one or more domain terms related to the problem to be solved, and a mapping component that uses the schema to search and map selected constructs from one or more generic host application APIs to the corresponding problem domain terms. Once the mapping is completed, a generating component generates a new API that is used by a host application to facilitate developing an application document using terms related to the domain of the problem to be solved.

Schema-based machine generated programming models

An architecture for customizable applications includes an application object and a customization object. The application object has internal logic that performs a set of fixed or predetermined actions, and a public object model. The public object model includes a set of public methods that are invocable on the application object, and a set of event source which are methods that can be implemented by a programmer and are called by the internal logic of the application object. By implementing methods invocable by the event sources, it is possible to extend and customize the functionality of the application object. The customizations are stored in a customization database for retrieval during the dynamic operation of the application object. Each customization may be identified by a 'moniker,' which is a string having a hierarchical format. The moniker is derived partly from fixed data known to the application object, and partly from environmental data that is ascertained by the application object at run time.

Architecture for customizable applications

Architecture that facilitates the creation of a customized document with embedded or linked code that can be run on a client or a server without invoking the host application. A programming model makes it transparent to the code whether it is running on the client or the server. The programming model automatically 'scales' to provide more features while running the document on the client and fewer features when running on the server. A transparent data island is automatically generated for the customized document that is embedded in the document and can be edited while requiring only a subset of all components of the host application to be running. A data binding mechanism is provided wherein changes that are made to the transparent data island while the host is not running can be moved back into the host document content when the document is reopened by the full host application.
