A magnetic write head having a write pole with a tapered trailing edge portion and having a spin torque oscillator that is formed entirely on the tapered trailing edge portion and that is self aligned with first and second sides of the write pole. The write pole and spin torque oscillator are formed by a method wherein the sides of the spin torque oscillator and write pole are defined in the same photolithographic and ion milling process, thereby allowing for the self alignment of the spin torque oscillator with the sides of the write pole.

Techniques of the present invention include detecting a touchdown between a read/write head of a disk drive and a surface of a magnetic disk using multiple touchdown sensors located at an air-bearing surface (ABS). The multiple sensors increase the likelihood that a touchdown event&#x2014;i.e., a portion of the ABS of the head contacting the underlying magnetic disk surface&#x2014;will be detected. During touchdown, the portion of the head contacting the magnetic disk generates frictional heat which changes a characteristic (e.g., the electrical resistance) of at least one of the sensors located at the ABS. When the sensors are connected to a detection circuit, the changing characteristic may be monitored to identify a touchdown event. The touchdown sensors may be, for example, electrically connected in either series or parallel to the detection circuit. Thus, as long as the electrical resistance of one of the sensors is changed, a touchdown event may be detected.

A magnetic write head having a tapered trailing edge and having a magnetic layer formed over a trailing edge of the write pole at a location recessed from the ABS, the magnetic layer being separated from the trailing edge of the write pole by a thin non-magnetic layer. The thin non-magnetic layer is preferably sufficiently thin that the magnetic layer can function as a portion of the write pole in a region removed from the ABS. A trailing magnetic shield is formed over the write pole and is separated from the write pole by a non-magnetic trailing gap layer. A non-magnetic spacer layer can be formed over the magnetic layer to provide additional separation between the magnetic layer and the trailing magnetic shield.

A method for manufacturing a magnetic write head having a leading magnetic shield and a trailing magnetic shield that are arranged to prevent the lost of magnetic write field to the trailing magnetic shield. The write head includes a non-magnetic step layer that provides additional spacing between the trailing magnetic shield and the write pole at a region removed from the air bearing surface.

A magnetic write head for use in a data recording system having first and second magnetic pole, the first pole having a P1 pedestal. An electrically conductive coil passes through a space between the first and second poles for inducing a magnetic flux through the yoke formed by the first and second poles. A bi-layer insulation layer disposed between the poles includes a layer of photoresist for preventing voids and a layer of alumina formed thereover to provide a structural brace to prevent recession of the P1 pedestal during manufacturing operations such as soda blast.

A cathode current control system employing a current thief for use in electroplating a wafer is set forth. The current thief comprises a plurality of conductive segments disposed to substantially surround a peripheral region of the wafer. A first plurality of resistance devices are used, each associated with a respective one of the plurality of conductive segments. The resistance devices are used to regulate current through the respective conductive finger during electroplating of the wafer. Various constructions are used for the current thief and further conductive elements, such as fingers, may also be employed in the system. As with the conductive segments, current through the fingers may also be individually controlled. In accordance with one embodiment of the overall system, selection of the resistance of each respective resistance devices is automatically controlled in accordance with predetermined programming.

An apparatus for rotary cathode electroplating having a head assembly, a substrate/thief assembly having a thieving ring which includes a number of individually chargeable segments, and a secondary induction assembly including a secondary core and a secondary winding. A motor drives the substrate/thief assembly to rotate relative to the head assembly. A controller directs electrical charge to each of the individually chargeable segments of the thieving ring. An electrical storage device stores electrical energy which is to be supplied to the controller. A charging apparatus induces a magnetic flux which induces an alternating current in the secondary winding of the secondary induction assembly. A converter converts the induced alternating current to direct current, which is then stored on the electrical storage device.

A magnetic induction device having at least one secondary induction assembly including a secondary winding is mounted on a rotary element. A magnetic flux is induced the secondary induction assembly, causing an induced secondary alternating current in the secondary winding of the secondary induction assembly. The secondary alternating current is converting to direct current and is stored in an electrical storage device.

The method and apparatus for supplying power to a rotary element by magnetic induction. A magnetic induction device having at least one secondary induction assembly including a secondary winding is mounted on the rotary element. A magnetic flux is induced the secondary induction assembly, causing an induced alternating current in the secondary winding of the secondary induction assembly. The secondary alternating current is converting to direct current and is stored in an electrical storage device. A rotary cathode plater is disclosed as a particular application of the apparatus by which power is transferred to a storage battery or high capacity capacitor, without the use of wires.

A rotary plater and method of plating are provided which improve the uniformity of plating across a plating surface of a workpiece. A plating solution distribution device is located in a plating cup between an anode and a cathode in a spaced relationship therebetween and is centered about a vertical axis of the plating cup. A motor is provided for relatively rotating the cathode and the plating solution distribution device with respect to one another. The plating solution distribution device distributes the plating solution over the plating surface at a distribution rate which increases radially outwardly from the vertical axis. With this arrangement the volume of plating solution at the outer periphery of the plating surface is enriched with ions to promote plating uniformity.

A dual gap horizontal thin film inductive head is provided which writes wide and reads narrow so as to avoid noise problems when reading an information track on a magnetic medium. The head has first and second gap layers between first and second horizontal pole tips. The pole tips and the corresponding pole pieces of the head are constructed of a high magnetic moment material, such as NiFe (Permalloy). The first gap layer is constructed of a magnetic insulator, such as tungsten, and the second gap layer is constructed of a low magnetic moment material, such as NiFeCr. Accordingly, the magnetic moment of the second gap layer is lower than the magnetic moment of the first and second pole tips and the corresponding first and second pole pieces. During recording both gap layers function as a gap because the second gap layer is saturated and behaves as a magnetic insulator. During playback only the first gap layer functions a gap because the second gap layer is not saturated causing it to behave as a magnetic conductor. Accordingly, during record the head 'writes wide' and during playback the head 'reads narrow.' A unique method is provided for making the head which employs a vertical edge of a photoresist layer for forming the first and second gap layers.
