In-situ polymerized polymer film facilitates improved paint film appliques with reduced defects. The paint film appliques comprise the in-situ polymerized polymer film as a carrier layer and at least one color layer assembled as a laminate, optionally further comprising at least one topcoat layer on one major surface of the laminate and an adhesive layer on the other major surface of the laminate.

Paint film appliques with reduced defects, articles, and methods

In-situ polymerized polymer film facilitates improved paint film appliques with reduced defects. The paint film appliques comprise the in-situ polymerized polymer film as a carrier layer. The carrier layer is colored and, preferably defect-free.

A polymeric film or laminate comprising the same is applied to at least a portion of a surface of an underlying article to provide, for example, desired surface characteristics. To assist in such application, a polymerizable composition is coated onto at least one of the surface of the polymeric film or the laminate and the surface of the article. The polymerizable composition is then polymerized with the polymeric film or laminate positioned thereover to form a sufficiently polymerized interlayer between the polymeric film or laminate and the underlying surface in resulting articles. Ease of removal and/or repair of polymeric film and laminates comprising the polymeric film that are so applied is facilitated.

Method for applying a polymeric film to a substrate and resulting articles

A polymeric film assembly comprising a first solidified interlayer on a polymeric film or laminate comprising the same that is contacted with at least a portion of a surface of an underlying article to provide, for example, desired surface characteristics. At least a portion of the first solidified interlayer becomes a softened interlayer positioned between the polymeric film and the surface of the article when contacted as such. The softened interlayer is then converted to a second solidified interlayer, which second solidified interlayer may be in a different form than or same form as the first solidified interlayer initially provided, for adherence of the polymeric film to at least the portion of the surface of the article. Ease of removal and/or repair of polymeric film and laminates comprising the polymeric film that are so applied is facilitated.

Multi-layer protective sheets of the invention are both rigid enough to provide desired protective properties, but flexible enough to be formable into a desired non-planar shape in order to protect surfaces such as optical display surfaces of electronic devices. Once formed into the desired non-planar shape, a modified interlayer of the multi-layer protective sheet has a shear storage modulus of greater than about 100 MPa.

The cover seals can be used to form sealed hard disk drives, wherein a cover seal is attached to an exterior surface of the cover of an enclosed hard disk drive housing so that an adhesive layer of the cover seal covers the entire junction where the base and cover components of the enclosed housing meet and a metallic joint adheres a perimeter of the cover seal to the base of the enclosed housing.

Described are articles, materials, and methods for protecting moving parts from degradation, such as protecting an airfoil or hydrofoil from erosion forces caused by air, sand, water, or wind. Described are foil-shaped erosion-resistant sleeves for protecting a foil. The sleeves may have a body with an outer surface, an inner surface, a thickness, a longitudinal dimension with a first end and a second end, and a dimension transverse to the longitudinal dimension, and the outer surface may include a shape-memory polymer or an elastomeric polymer with a materially continuous perimeter circumscribing the body around the transverse dimension, and an opening at the first end of the body adapted to receive the foil. Some erosion-resistant sleeves may be installed on a foil by inserting the foil into the sleeve through an opening in the sleeve, contracting the sleeve around the foil, and conforming the sleeve around the foil.

A method for formation of a polymer film in-situ according to the invention comprises steps of: providing a polymerizable composition in one or multiple parts; initiating polymerization of the polymerizable composition to form a polymerizing composition; prior to completion of polymerization of the polymerizable composition, forming a film therefrom; and fully polymerizing the polymerizing composition to form the polymer film.

A method of assembling a disk drive according to the invention comprises steps of: providing a base component of a housing of the disk drive; providing a cover component of the housing; mating the base component and the cover component to form an enclosed housing that encloses disk drive components for operation of the disk drive; and sealing the disk drive using low thermal energy bonding. A hermetically sealed disk drive of the invention comprises: a housing comprising a base and a cover; and disk drive components enclosed within the housing for operation of the disk drive, wherein the housing comprises a bondline continuously extending around a periphery of the housing for sealing the same.
