A fluid compressor device includes a housing and a rotating group supported for rotation within the housing about an axis. The device also includes a compressor stage including a compressor wheel of the rotating group that is supported on a shaft of the rotating group. The device also includes an e-machine stage including an e-machine that is operably coupled to the shaft and that is configured to operate as at least one of a motor and a generator. Additionally, the device includes an integrated controller that extends at least partly over the e-machine stage in a circumferential direction about the axis. The integrated controller includes a coolant core that receives a flow of a coolant therethrough for cooling the integrated controller. The coolant core extends over the e-machine stage in a circumferential direction about the axis.

Electrical systems and devices with substrate interconnections having reduced parasitic inductance are provided. A first substrate includes one or more capacitors and plurality of connection interfaces, wherein a first subset of connection interfaces electrically connected to a first reference voltage are interleaved with a second subset of connection interfaces electrically connected to a different reference voltage. A second substrate includes a third subset of connection interfaces are electrically connected to a first terminal of a first switching element and the first subset of connection interfaces and a fourth subset of connection interfaces electrically connected to a second terminal of a second switching element and the second subset of connection interfaces, and the third subset and the fourth subset are also interleaved.

Electrical systems having interleaved DC interconnects

Systems and methods are provided for managing temperatures associated with a throttle loss recovery system. One exemplary system includes a flow control assembly for recovering energy from a fluid bypassing a flow control valve based on an orientation of the flow control valve, a conduit providing fluid communication with the flow control assembly for the portion of the fluid flow bypassing the flow control valve, and an electronics assembly including an electronics module coupled to the flow control assembly. At least a portion of the electronics assembly is in fluid communication with the portion of the fluid flow bypassing the flow control valve, thereby allowing for heat transfer between the electronics assembly and the fluid bypassing the flow control valve.

Temperature management for throttle loss recovery systems

Turbine assemblies, loss recovery systems, and related fabrication methods are provided for managing temperatures associated with an electrical generator. One exemplary turbine assembly suitable for use in a loss recovery system includes a wheel configured to rotate in response to a portion of a fluid flow bypassing a flow control valve, a generator including a stator assembly disposed about a rotor coupled to the wheel to rotate in response to rotation of the wheel, a conductive structure in contact with the stator assembly, and an insulating structure radially encompassing the conductive structure and the generator. The conductive structure accesses at least a portion of the fluid flow bypassing the flow control valve and impacting the wheel, thereby providing thermal coupling between the stator assembly and the bypass fluid flow to transfer heat from the stator assembly to the bypass fluid flow via the conductive structure.

Generator temperature management for throttle loss recovery systems

Systems and methods are provided for managing temperatures associated with a flow control assembly, such as a throttle loss recovery assembly. One exemplary method of operating a flow control assembly generating electrical energy in response to a bypass fluid flow influenced by an orientation of a flow control valve involves operating the flow control assembly to deliver the electrical energy to a vehicle electrical system and automatically adjusting operation to increase heat generation at the flow control assembly in response to a temperature condition, such as a potential icing condition or a cold start condition.

Systems and methods are provided for managing excess electrical energy generated by a throttle loss recovery system. One exemplary system includes a flow control assembly to generate electrical energy in response to a portion of a fluid flow bypassing a flow control valve, an electrical system coupled to the flow control assembly to receive the electrical energy, and a control module coupled to the electrical system. The electrical system includes an energy storage element and an electrical load. The control module detects an excess energy condition based at least in part on a characteristic of the electrical system, and in response, operates the electrical system to dissipate at least a portion of the electrical energy generated by the flow control assembly using the electrical load.

Excess power dissipation for throttle loss recovery systems

A turbocharger includes an annular bypass volute to allow exhaust gas to bypass the turbine wheel. An annular bypass valve is disposed in the bypass volute. The bypass valve comprises a fixed annular valve seat and a rotary annular valve member arranged coaxially with the valve seat. The valve member is disposed against the valve seat and is rotatable about the axis for selectively varying a degree of alignment between respective orifices in the valve seat and valve member. The valve member is rotatably driven by a rotary actuator and drive linkage that rotates about an axis parallel to and offset from the axis about which the valve member rotates.

An electro-pneumatic actuator for a waste gate includes an electric actuator to impart linear motion to an actuator shaft, and a pneumatic chamber defining a passage extending therethrough, the actuator shaft extending through the passage, the pneumatic chamber being sealed with respect to the actuator shaft. A piston is disposed in the pneumatic chamber and arranged for movement in the pneumatic chamber, the piston being affixed to the actuator shaft such that the actuator shaft and the piston move together as a unit. There is a port into the pneumatic chamber for feeding a gas into the pneumatic chamber or exhausting the gas therefrom so as to exert a pressure force on the piston and thereby provide a pneumatic assist to the force exerted on the actuator shaft.

Electro-pneumatic actuator for a turbocharger waste gate, and a turbocharger and a method employing same

A turbocharger having a turbine with a wastegate, and a compressor including a compressor housing, a compressor wheel, and a wastegate actuator. The turbine wheel includes blades defining an inlet. The compressor housing has an inlet wall leading to the inlet, and a shroud wall surrounding the blades. The actuator includes a base that is integral with the inlet wall, and an electric motor that is attached to the base. The shroud wall forms a first port that is in direct fluid communication with the actuator chamber, and the inlet wall forms a second port that is in direct fluid communication with the actuator chamber. Air from the first port to passes through the actuator housing and out the second port. This airflow convectively cools the working components of the actuator, while the connection of the motor to the inlet wall conductively cools the motor.

Turbocharger with integrated actuator

A variable geometry turbocharger employs multiple vanes in the turbine inlet with a unison ring and integral cast wall in the turbine housing forming the nozzle walls. An actuator rotates the unison ring through a rack and pinion driven crank shaft to move the vanes through a range of vane positions that extends between a hard-stop closed position and a hard-stop open position, and that includes a reference position corresponding to a desired flow condition. A variable geometry turbine controller uses a sensor indicating the actuation position of the actuator to guide the operation of the vanes to the reference position. The controller intermittently directs the actuator to force the vanes to the hard-stop closed and hard-stop open positions, and uses sensor information from those positions to reestablish the reference-position information that the actuator uses to guide the actuation of the vanes.
