Provided are devices and methods capable of interfacing with biological tissues, such as organs like the heart, in real-time and using techniques which provide the ability to monitor and control complex physical, chemical, biochemical and thermal properties of the tissues as a function of time. The described devices and methods utilize micro scale sensors and actuators to spatially monitor and control a variety of physical, chemical and biological tissue parameters, such as temperature, pH, spatial position, force, pressure, electrophysiology and to spatially provide a variety of stimuli, such as heat, light, voltage and current.

Organ mounted electronics

In some examples, a sensor comprises a circuit including an inductor. The inductor comprises an inductor layer, a reference layer comprising at least one of an electrically conductive material or a magnetic material, and a variable layer formed between the reference layer and inductor layer. A thickness of the variable layer may be configured to change upon application of a force external to the variable layer thereby causing a change in position of the reference layer relative the inductor layer, and the change in position of the reference layer relative the inductor layer changes an inductance of the inductor. The sensor may be configured to detect the force based on the change in inductance of the inductor.

Force responsive inductors for force sensors

A fluid treatment cartridge includes a housing having a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet with a treatment media contained within the housing. The fluid treatment cartridge includes a detection member comprising at least one closed electrically conductive loop having at least two spatially separate sections. Each of the sections generates a magnetic response when at least one section is electromagnetically excited. The magnetic response of each section is predetermined by the physical shape of the section and comprises at least one of a predetermined magnetic phase response and a predetermined magnetic amplitude response. The predetermined magnetic response of at least one other section of the closed electrically conductive loop corresponds to at least a one digit code.

Conductive loop detection member

Disclosed are appendage mountable electronic systems and related methods for covering and conforming to an appendage surface. A flexible or stretchable substrate has an inner surface for receiving an appendage, including an appendage having a curved surface, and an opposed outer surface that is accessible to external surfaces. A stretchable or flexible electronic device is supported by the substrate inner and/or outer surface, depending on the application of interest. The electronic device in combination with the substrate provides a net bending stiffness to facilitate conformal contact between the inner surface and a surface of the appendage provided within the enclosure. In an aspect, the system is capable of surface flipping without adversely impacting electronic device functionality, such as electronic devices comprising arrays of sensors, actuators, or both sensors and actuators.

Appendage mountable electronic devices conformable to surfaces

Some aspects of the present disclosure feature a system for sensing a change in environment comprising a MMR sensor and a reader. The MMR sensor is configured to be disposed in the environment. The MMR sensor comprises a magnetic bias layer, a resonator, a spacer, and an environmental change receptor. The reader is configured to measure a frequency characteristic of the MMR sensor after the environmental variable changes and the change to the environmental variable is evaluated based on the frequency characteristic.

Systems and methods for magneto-mechanical resonator sensors

A touch panel includes a touch sensor having a dielectric core layer disposed between first and second piezoelectric layers. Each piezoelectric layer comprises a poled piezoelectric polymer. The touch sensor further includes at least a first set of individually addressable electrodes disposed over the first piezoelectric layer and at least one second electrode disposed over the second piezoelectric layer. Circuitry is coupled to the first set of electrodes and the second electrode. The circuitry is configured to detect a change in an electrical signal of at least one electrode of the first set of electrodes referenced to the second electrode in response to a touch applied to the touch surface of the touch sensor.

Multi-layer piezoelectric polymer film devices and methods

A system for monitoring temperature of an electrical conductor () enclosed in at least a (semi)conductive layer () comprising: a passive inductive unit (), and a transceiver unit () and a control unit (). The passive inductive unit () includes at least one temperature sensitive component and is configured to have a resonance frequency and/or Q value that vary with temperature of the electrical conductor (). The transceiver unit () is configured to be electromagnetically coupled to the passive inductive unit () and to send out a signal representing the resonance frequency and/or Q value of the passive inductive unit (). The transceiver unit () is further configured to communicate with the control unit () which ascertains the signal representing one or both of the resonance frequency and Q value, and which determines a value of the temperature of the electrical conductor () based on the ascertained signal representing one or both of the resonance frequency and Q value.
