An exhaust after-treatment system for treating an exhaust stream from an internal combustion engine of an automotive vehicle includes first and second exhaust treatment devices in a parallel path, continuous flow, flow rate sensitive exhaust temperature modification circuit for conducting exhaust gases from the first treatment device to the second exhaust treatment device.

A method for restoring exhaust purifying capability of a sulfur contaminated catalytic converter of an internal combustion engine. Catalytic converter efficiency is measured with a first exhaust gas oxygen sensor positioned upstream of the catalytic converter and a second exhaust gas oxygen sensor positioned downstream of the catalytic converter. When catalytic converter efficiency falls below a desired level, catalytic converter temperature is elevated and the engine is operated to produce a rich exhaust gas mixture to reduce the sulfur contamination. Then, to further reduce the sulfur contamination, the engine is operated to produce a lean exhaust mixture.

Catalytic converter decontamination method

A catalytic converter having a first highly loaded palladium or trimetal catalytic element containing palladium of relatively large particle size closely coupled to the engine exhaust manifold, followed by one or more second catalytic elements having high oxygen storage capacity to provide protection against warmed-up engine emissions break through, is efficient in reducing cold-start emissions through early catalyst light-off. The catalytic converter is advantageously used in conjunction with an engine strategy employing oscillative spark retard during warm up to further reduce catalyst light-off and transient spark advance dampening to eliminate spiking of HC and CO during engine transients. When employed in conjunction with secondary air injection, the engine EEC is programmed to delay air injection for a period following cold-start sufficient to assure that catalyst light-off is rapidly attained.

This invention is directed to a catalyst system for treating internal combustion engine exhaust gases, the system having enhanced hydrocarbon trapping efficiency which is particularly advantageous during cold start. The system comprises a hydrocarbon polymerization catalyst, a hydrocarbon trap located downstream of the hydrocarbon (HC) polymerization catalyst, advanced exhaust treatment catalyst. The hydrocarbon polymerization catalyst is capable of forming larger (HC) molecules from smaller HC molecules.
