An eye model for simulating surgery has an eyeball portion suspended within a frame. The suspension has a flexible material connected to the eyeball and the frame which flexes when the eyeball is pushed during a surgical simulation, so that the eyeball can be moved within a range of motion corresponding to the range of motion of the natural eye, and also so that when the force is applied to the eyeball the eyeball resists displacement with a force similar to resistance of the natural eye.

Suspending the eye in a model for surgical simulation

The problem of inserting and removing a rigid gas permeable or hybrid contact lens is solved by the use of a lens manipulator. The lens manipulator includes a handle and an over-sleeve that is optionally attachable to an extraction stem, for creating a suction force to remove a contact lens, and an insertion stem, without suction force for placing a contact lens. Removal of the extraction stem from the over-sleeve eliminates the suction force and acts as a safety release against excessive pull force on an eye when removing a contact lens. A manual-release mechanism can be used to facilitate removal of the extraction stem.

A lens manipulator that includes an over-sleeve with a suction cup and lumen therethrough that forms a pore in the suction cup and a rod opening at the opposite end for receiving an adjustment rod. Adjustment of the length of the adjustment rod in the lumen controls the amount of suction force generated under the suction cup against a contact lens. Removal of the adjustment rod from the lumen eliminates the suction force and acts as a safety release against excessive pull force on an eye when removing a contact lens.

A representation of the skull ('a mask') based upon imaging of the head enables simulation of surgical procedures. The mask is limited in extent to a zone extending above the inferior boundary of the maxilla in the axial plane, between the outer limits of the zygomatic bones in the sagittal plane, and anterior to the coronal suture of the skull in the coronal plane, and includes orbits and a nasal opening. The mask is detachably connected to a posterior base. The base includes a fluid retaining surface which forms a basin. A peripheral edge slidingly mates with a posterior portion of the mask to enable rotation of the mask. The base has a mounting surface for eye models that is posterior to each of the mask orbits. A drain port enables drainage from the base. A nasal structure resembling a nose is reversibly insertable into the nasal opening.

Simulating head anatomy for eye surgery

A model for simulating surgery upon the eye has a posterior and an anterior segment. The posterior segment includes structures corresponding to those of the eye, including a hollow globe and an image of the fundus positioned upon an interior, posterior portion of the globe. A mating portion is peripherally formed about an open end of the globe. The anterior segment also includes structures corresponding to those of the eye, including a translucent lens, and another mating portion peripherally formed about a posterior portion of the anterior segment. The mating portions of the posterior and anterior segments releasably connect the posterior and anterior segments. A vitreous substitute material can be added into the posterior segment and is sealed within when the anterior segment is attached.

Simulating eye surgery

A reusable surgical model of the eye has mating anterior and posterior segments. The posterior segment has structures corresponding to those of the eye, including a hollow globe and an image of the fundus positioned upon an interior, posterior portion of the globe. A mating connector is peripherally formed about an open end of the globe. The anterior segment includes structures corresponding to those of the eye, including a pars plana, an opening in a region corresponding to an iris, and a lens positionable within the opening. The anterior segment has a peripheral connector which mates with that of the posterior segment. The lens is removably connected to the anterior segment, and has a focal length corresponding to a natural eye. A coating is applied to the fundus to enable simulation of a membrane peeling procedure, and the globe is fillable with a vitreous substitute.

A synthetic eye model includes an enclosed lens capsule, a removable cortex material within the lens capsule, and an outer support for the lens capsule. A synthetic eye model assembly includes an eye segment comprising a lens capsule and an outer support and a base for detachably engaging the eye segment. The synthetic eye model and assembly can be made by 3D printing. A method of practicing eye surgery and a method of making a three-dimensional synthetic tissue model of an anatomical tissue structure are also disclosed.

Method for fabricating simulated tissue structures by means of multi material 3D printing

An ophthalmic refractor is described that provides a non-linear relationship between spherical power and refractive error by positioning a reference plane for a sensor system of the refractor in front of the cornea. The refractor may have a working distance and dynamic range that enable it to be mounted on a surgical microscope. Also described are computational methods for analysing the output from the ophthalmic refractor, utilising error minimisation, linear regression and Fourier Transform analysis.

Ophthalmic refractor and method of ophthalmic refractor signal analysis

A keratoprosthesis and system and method of using same for corneal repair. The keratoprosthesis comprises a biocompatible support and an optic member disposed through a channel within the support. The support includes metal, preferably titanium, and treated, such as by sandblasting and/or acid etching, to create textured surfaces that promote soft tissue adhesion. A locking member interconnects the optic member and support. An outer surface of the locking member a collar extending from the support and disposed around the optic member is also metal, preferably titanium, and is similarly treated to promote soft tissue adhesion. A locking member interconnects the optic member and support. The system includes the keratoprosthesis positioned within an isolated soft tissue segment of a non-ocular tissue, such as buccal mucosa, placed on the anterior cornea. The method includes removing corneal epithelium, isolating and transplanting a segment of soft tissue to the de-epithelialized cornea, creating a receiving area in the soft tissue, positioning a keratoprosthesis relative to the receiving area anterior to the cornea, and securing the keratoprosthesis.

Keratoprosthesis, and system and method of corneal repair using same

A dolly assembly including a plurality of hollow interior guide members and one or more rail members, cooperatively structured, configured and dimensioned to be selectively disposed in an operative, weight supporting orientation or a self-contained orientation of reduced dimension and configuration, which facilitates storage. The operative orientation comprises the one or more rail member removably interconnecting the two guide members in spaced relation to one another, wherein a plurality of castors are removably connected to and disposed in movable supporting relation with the interconnected guide and rail members, when in the operative orientation. The self-contained orientation comprises the guide members detached from the operative orientation and the guide members removably connected in confronting, predetermined facing relation to one another, such that the rail members and castors are enclosed within one or both of the hollow interiors of the confronting guide members.

Self-contained dolly assembly

A castor supported dolly assembly, but also a dolly assembly that can be used either with or without castors so as to provide a new pallet assembly. The dolly assembly comprises a plurality of dolly members formed of a lightweight, disposable and/or severable material may be interconnected into interchangeable operative positions to define supporting orientations. Each dolly member includes and at least one connecting segment comprising a slot and a base. A connected orientation, of any two of the dolly members, comprises a confronting relation of the bases of engaging connecting segments and an aligned orientation of corresponding passages formed therein, so as to concurrently allow a castor to be removably received and retained in interconnecting relation to the confronting bases. Each dolly member may also include at least one supporting segment structured to receive a castor therein.

Castor supported dolly assembly capable of being made from lightweight materials and of being used as a pallet assembly

A castor assembly structured for use in combination with or independently of a dolly assembly or other support platform, which may include substantially equivalently structured struts, wherein the castor assembly includes a one piece base comprising a housing and a head integrally connected to the housing and extending radially outward from one end thereof. The housing includes an open interior and a open end structured to movably retain a surface engaging roller ball therein. A retaining portion may be formed on said base in cooperative relation with said head so as to secure a support platform to the base when in a first operative position. A second operative position comprises said head disposed in engagable and at least partially supporting relation to an object while the base is not secured to or used in combination with a dolly or other support platform.
