A method of calibrating a collimating lens system includes transmitting, using an optical transmitter, a beam out of an optical fiber and through a collimating lens of the collimating lens system. The beam is reflected off a perfect flat mirror positioned at an output of the collimating lens and back towards the collimating lens, and received, via the collimating lens, at a power meter connected to the optical fiber. The method also includes adjusting a position of a tip of the optical fiber proximal to the collimating lens while tracking a power reading using the power meter, selecting a calibration position of the optical fiber corresponding to a highest power reading, and securing the optical fiber relative to the collimating lens using the calibration position.

Aspects of the disclosure provide a system including a first communications terminal. The first communications terminal may include an optical phased array (OPA) including a plurality of phase shifters configured to receive an optical communications beam from a second communications terminal. The first communications terminal may also include one or more processors configured to determine a link axis for communication with the second communications terminal based on the received optical communications beam, identify a compensatory wavefront curvature for mitigating cross-coupling, and generate a wavefront of an outgoing optical communications beam using the plurality of phase shifters based on the determined link axis and the compensatory wavefront curvature.

The disclosure provides for a free-space optical communication system that includes a first lens group, a field corrector lens, and a second lens group. The first lens group is configured to receive light received from a remote free-space optical transmitter. The first lens group has a first focal plane. The field corrector lens is positioned between the first lens group and the first focal plane of the first lens group and positioned closer to the first focal plane than the first lens group. The first lens group also is made of material having an index of refraction of at least 2.0, and has a second focal plane. The second lens group is positioned at the second focal plane of the field corrector lens and is configured to couple light to a sensor.

Aspects of the disclosure provide an optical communication system. The system may include a receiver lens system configured to receive a light beam from a remote optical communication system and direct the light beam to a photodetector. The system may also include the photodetector. The photodetector may be configured to convert the received light beam into an electrical signal, and the photodetector may be positioned at a focal plane of the receiver lens system. The system may also include a phase-aberrating element arranged with respect to the receiver lens system and the photodetector such that the phase-aberrating element is configured to provide uniform angular irradiance at the focal plane of the receiver lens system.

An optical communication device is provided that includes a first lens having a first surface and a second surface, a second lens having a third surface and a fourth surface, an optical fiber configured to output light including a plurality of ray bundles, and a photodetector located at the fourth surface of the second lens. The disclosure provides for an optical communication device that includes a photodetector, an optical fiber, a first lens, and a second lens. The optical fiber may be configured to relay light. The first lens may include a first surface and a second surface and has an image plane. The first lens may be configured to receive the light output from the optical fiber, where the received light has a first cross-sectional area at the first surface. The second lens may include a third surface positioned at the image plane of the first lens and a fourth surface positioned adjacent to the photodetector. The second lens may be configured to receive the light output from the first lens and to output light having a second cross-sectional area at the fourth surface that is smaller than the first cross-sectional area.

A display panel includes an array of display pixels to output an image. The array of display pixels includes a central pixel region and a perimeter pixel region. The central pixel region includes central pixel units each having three different colored sub-pixels. The different colored sub-pixels of the central pixel units are organized according to a central layout pattern that repeats across the central pixel region. The perimeter pixel region is disposed along a perimeter of the central pixel region and includes perimeter pixel units that increase a brightness of the image along edges of the central pixel region to mask gaps around the array of display pixels when tiling the array of display pixels with other arrays of display pixels.

A display apparatus includes a transparent substrate having first and second sides, an array of LED micro-display panels, and an array of collimating reflectors. The LED micro-display panels are disposed within the transparent substrate between the first and second sides and oriented to emit sub-image portions of a display image towards the first side. The collimating reflectors are disposed within the transparent substrate between the first side and the array of LED micro-display panels. The collimating reflectors are aligned with the LED micro-display panels to reflect the sub-image portions back out the second side of the transparent substrate. The LED micro-display panels are offset from the collimating reflectors to expand the sub-image portions prior to reflection by the collimating reflectors.

A tileable display panel includes a screen layer, an illumination layer and a display layer. The screen layer is for displaying a unified image to a viewer. The illumination layer includes at least one light source emitting lamp light into a diffusing region of the illumination layer. The illumination layer also includes a plurality of emission apertures that are each configured to emit the lamp light from the diffusing region in a divergent projection beam. The display layer is disposed between the screen layer and the illumination layer. The display layer includes a plurality of pixelets corresponding to the plurality of emission apertures. The pixelets in the plurality of pixelets are positioned to be illuminated by the divergent projection beams from the corresponding emission apertures.

A multi-layer projection screen includes a stray light rejection layer and a lens array. The stray light rejection layer includes an array of pillar structures, wherein each pillar structure of the array of pillar structures includes an entrance aperture, an exit aperture, a pathway extending from the entrance aperture to the exit aperture, and a side wall surrounding the pathway. The lens array is optically aligned to the array of pillar structures. The stray light rejection layer blocks display light received from the lens array having an oblique trajectory that is greater than a threshold angle from a first trajectory.

Techniques and mechanisms to provide for improved image display in an area of overlapping projections. In an embodiment, a multi-layer projection screen comprises light sources and collimation structures each disposed over a corresponding one of such light sources. A first collimation structure disposed over a first light source collimates first light from the first light source. The first collimation structure further receives and redirects second light from a second light source disposed under a second collimation structure that adjoins the first collimation structure. In another embodiment, the first collimation structure redirects the other light from the second light source away from the direction of collimation of the first light. A stray light rejection layer of the multi-layer projection screen passes a majority of the first light for inclusion as part of a projected image, and prevents a majority of the second light from inclusion in the projected image.

Apparatus, system and method for mitigating contrast artifacts at an overlap region of a projected image

A display tile for arranging with other display tiles to form a multi-tile display includes display pixels in an active display area, pixel tape sections, and a transparent layer. The pixel tape sections surround the display pixels. Each pixel tape section overlaps an adjacent pixel tape section and is overlapped by another adjacent pixel tape section disposed opposite the adjacent pixel tape section. Each pixel tape section includes a pixel array. The transparent layer is disposed over the display pixels and the pixel arrays of the pixel tape sections. The display pixels and the pixel arrays are arranged to display an overall image of the display tile.
