An organic light emitting device (&ldquo;OLED&rdquo;), including a substrate, a conductive nitride electrode, an organic film, and a second conductive electrode. The conductive nitride films can be transparent or opaque depending on their thickness. The OLEDs provide high brightness and efficiency and can be incorporated into electronic devices, including computers, monitors, televisions, large area wall screens, theater screens, stadium screens, billboards, signs, vehicles, printers, telecommunications devices, and telephones.

An organic light emitting device comprising a heterostructure for producing electro-luminescence. The heterostructure has a charge carrier layer that includes a compound having molecules having at least one electron transporting moiety that is a 2-methyl-8-quinolinolato ligand coordinated with a metal chosen from the group Al, Ga, and In, and at least one hole transporting moiety. For example, the compound may be bis(2-methyl-8-quinolinolato)&lsqb;p-(N-phenyl-2-naphthylamino)phenolato&rsqb;aluminum(III), bis(2-methyl-g-quinolinolato)p-carbazolphenolato)aluminum(III), or bis(2-methyl-8-quinolinolato)(m-carbazolphenolato)aluminum(III).

An emissive layer in an organic light emitting device comprising a heterostructure comprises a host material, an emissive molecule, present as a dopant in said host material, adapted to luminesce when a voltage is applied across the heterostructure; and a polarization molecule, present as a dopant in said host material and having a dipole moment, that affects the wavelength of light emitted when said emissive dopant molecule luminesces, wherein said polarization molecule is selected from the group consisting of N,N-dimethylparanitroaniline, certain polyphenyls, certain stilbenes, certain fluorenes, and certain diphenylacetylenes, and a method for making same.

Color-tunable organic light emitting devices

The present invention is directed to organic light emitting devices comprised of an electroluminescent layer containing a host material comprised of a metal complex of (5-hydroxy)quinoxaline: ##STR1## wherein M is Al, Ga, In, Zn or Mg, with n=3, if M is Al, Ga or In and n=2, if M is Zn or Mg, and to a method for fabricating such devices. Further disclosed for use in the electroluminescent layer of organic light emitting devices are dopant materials comprised of a bisphenyl-squarilium compound, an indigo dye compound or a fullerene compound.
