An insulated drill pipe joint for a drill string of a well system includes an outer sub defining a central passage extending between a first end of the outer sub and a longitudinally opposed second end of the outer sub, wherein the outer sub includes a first connector located at the first end and a second connector located at the second end, an inner mandrel slidably received in the central passage of the outer sub and defining a central passage extending between a first end of the inner mandrel and a longitudinally opposed second end of the inner mandrel, wherein an annular insulation compartment is formed that at least partially surrounds the inner mandrel and which is sealed from the central passage of the inner mandrel, and an insulation medium located in the insulation compartment and has a greater thermal resistance than the outer sub.

Disclosed is an elevator for holding and end portion of a pipe in a drill tower. The elevator includes a hole from which, in operational use, an end portion of the pipe is suspended. The minimum diameter of the end portion of the pipe is selected larger than the minimum diameter of the hole, wherein sidewalls of the hole are shaped with a receiving surface for receiving correspondingly-shaped sidewalls of the end portion of the pipe. Similarly, sidewalls of the end portion of the pipe are shaped with an engagement surface for engagement with correspondingly-shaped sidewalls of the hole. Both the receiving surface and the engagement surface includes a first part and a second part neighbouring the first part, the first part defining a frustoconical shape having a first conicity, and the second part defining a shape having at least partially a second conicity lower than the first conicity.

A refacing tool includes a feed assembly that holds a first set of cutters positioned for refacing the inner shoulder of a pin or box end of a tubular and a second set of cutters positioned for refacing the outer shoulder of the pin or box end. The axial spacing between the first set of cutters and the second set of cutters is fixed and determined by the geometry of the feed assembly. The refacing tool can simultaneously reface the inner shoulder and the outer shoulder, as well as chamfers.

Tools and methods for refacing tubular ends forming a threaded connection

Some embodiments disclosed herein are directed to a tubular member including a central axis, a first end, a second end opposite the first end, an upset region between and axially spaced from the first end and the second end, and a first outer diameter axially spaced midway between the first end and the upset region. The upset region includes a second diameter which is larger than the first diameter, does not include a weld joint, and includes redistributed material from the tubular member.

Wear resistant tubular members and systems and methods for producing the same

A hole cleaning joint for a drill string is deployed into a wellbore penetrating a subterranean formation. The hole cleaning joint includes a tubular body connectable to the drill string and a hole cleaning section positionable about the tubular body. The hole cleaning section has an outer surface engageable with a wall of the well bore. The outer surface has spiral grooves extending therein defining blades therebetween, and an uphole end and a downhole end with a spiral cavity therebetween. The spiral cavity has a width that decreases towards the uphole end of the spiral cavity to define a tapered flow channel to receive cuttings therethrough whereby uphole movement of cuttings is facilitated during drilling.

Downhole hole cleaning joints and method of using same

A tubular member has a longitudinal axis, a first end, and a second end. The tubular member includes a pin connector including an external shoulder, an internal shoulder axially spaced from the external shoulder, and a plurality of threads in a region between the external shoulder and the internal shoulder that taper relative to the longitudinal axis at 1.0 to 1.5 inches per foot. The threads include an axial density measured in a number of threads per inch (TPI), and when the pin connector is threadably engaged with a box connector, each of the threads contacts a corresponding box thread on the box connector along a projected radial distance H. In addition, the threads are configured such that the product of 2(&#x221a;{square root over (3)})(H)(TPI) is greater than or equal to 0.95 and less than or equal to 1.05.

A thread form having improved strength and fatigue resistance. The root of the thread may be cut on multiple cutting radii having displaced centers. At least two of the root surfaces formed by cutting radii may have lengths that are greater than the root truncation. The threads may be used in a double start configuration to increase the connection strength and reduce makeup and breakout rotations.

A double shouldered downhole tool connection comprises box and pin connections having mating threads intermediate mating primary and secondary shoulders. The connection further comprises a secondary shoulder component retained in the box connection intermediate a floating component and the primary shoulders. The secondary shoulder component and the pin connection cooperate to transfer a portion of makeup load to the box connection. The downhole tool may be selected from the group consisting of drill pipe, drill collars, production pipe, and reamers. The floating component may be selected from the group consisting of electronics modules, generators, gyroscopes, power sources, and stators. The secondary shoulder component may comprises an interface to the box connection selected from the group consisting of radial grooves, axial grooves, tapered grooves, radial protrusions, axial protrusions, tapered protrusions, shoulders, and threads.
