Embodiments include systems and methods for assisting an operator (e.g., a pilot) of an apparatus (e.g., an aircraft) that includes a control compartment (e.g., a cockpit). The system includes a near-eye display and a processing subsystem. The near-eye display includes a transparent display panel and is adapted to be worn on a head of the operator. The processing subsystem is adapted to receive layout information defining a physical layout of one or more operational components located within the control compartment. The processing subsystem is further adapted to determine a location for a display indicator on the transparent display panel, where the location is determined to appear to the operator to be in proximity to an operational component. The processing subsystem is further adapted to generate a display signal to cause the near-eye display to display the display indicator in the location.

A device and method for displaying grey levels on electronic paper is provided. According to various embodiments, a system for electronic paper can include an electret substrate embedded with at least one first capsule containing a first plurality of charged pigment particles and at least one second capsule containing a second plurality of charged pigment particles. The system can further include a first electrode interfacing with one side of the electret substrate and a second electrode interfacing with a second side of the electret substrate. The first plurality of charged pigment particles can move in the direction of one of the first and second electrodes having a polarity that is opposite to that of the first plurality of the charged pigment particles in response to a voltage applied to the first and second electrodes that is greater than a first threshold. The second plurality of charged pigment particles can move in the direction of one of the first and second electrodes having a polarity that is opposite to that of the second plurality of the charged pigment particles in response to a voltage applied to the first and second electrodes that is greater than a second threshold, the second threshold differing from the first threshold.

The area is defined by one or more information markers that may be active or passive markers. A sensor operable to detect the information markers is rigidly attached to a motion tracker which is aligned and calibrated relative to the information markers and by detecting at least one of the information markers causes the virtual object image to appear to remain within the defined area.

Systems, apparatus and fast methods for aligning images to external markers in near-to-eye display systems

Provided are methods and systems for reducing visual distortion in near-to-eye ('NTE') visual display systems that is worn, at least partially, on a viewer's head. The movement rate of the viewer's head is sensed while an image that comprises individual content frames is displayed on the NTE using a vertically based raster scan. A characteristic of the raster scan is varied to mitigate distortion of the content frames due to the viewer's head movement.

Methods for reducing artifacts in near-to-eye display systems

A liquid crystal display (LCD) device () having an integrated touchscreen includes a built-in probe signal source behind the liquid crystal (LC) layer (). The probe signal source may include a pair of light sources (and) modulated at first and second frequencies (fand f), respectively. A pair of probe light sensing devices (and) may also be implemented behind the LC layer, each configured to measure the intensities of the first and second frequencies, respectively. The probe light sensing devices are designed to detect user contact with the touchscreen surface by sensing a reflection of the probe light signals from the touchscreen surface. Using the multiple intensity measurements from each probe light sensing device, the location of the point of contact on the touchscreen surface is determined.

An imaging system for generating multiple images includes a first imaging device and a second imaging device. The first imaging device includes a sensor and has a first optical path from an object to the sensor for generating a first object image. The second imaging device includes a sensor and has a first optical path from an object to the sensor for generating a second object image. At least one of the first imaging device and the second imaging device includes a second optical path from an external reference marker to its sensor for generating a reference image. The reference image indicates positioning of the first imaging device or the second imaging device.

Embodiments include systems and methods for assisting a pilot of an aircraft. The system includes a near-eye display and a processing subsystem. The near-eye display includes a transparent display panel that is adapted to be oriented in proximity to at least one eye of the pilot. The processing subsystem is adapted to receive aircraft data that indicates an attitude of the aircraft, and to determine whether the aircraft data indicates a potential spatial disorientation situation. When the aircraft data indicates the potential spatial disorientation situation, the processing system is adapted to cause the near-eye display to display an exterior display indicator overlying at least a portion of the windshield of the aircraft. The exterior display indicator includes a visual representation of an earth-based reference, and the exterior display indicator is oriented to indicate the attitude of the aircraft.

Methods and apparatus to assist pilots under conditions in which spatial disorientation may be present

A battery health or prognosis system may employ a ferrite disc embedded in a printed wiring board (PWB) to perform both a battery current sensing role and a temperature sensing role. The ferrite disc may be surrounded with a coil that may be comprised of surface conductors and electrically conductive vias of the PWB. Excursions of coil current may be produced to generate observable hysterisis loops in the ferrite disc. The generated hysterisis loops may be compared to a temperature-dependent family of hysterisis loops for the magnetic material from which the ferrite disc is constructed. A processor mounted on the PWB may collect and process outputs from a Hall-effect sensor to develop both temperature and battery current information to produce a prognosis for the battery.

A liquid crystal display (LCD) device () has the dual functionality of image display and environment scanning. Specifically, during environment scanning mode, the LCD device searches for targets, i.e., markers () in the environment. To enable such scanning, the LC layer () is configured to provide a scanning optical path allowing passage of a directional marker signal. The scanning optical path is controlled according to one or more transparent openings programmed to scan at least part of the LC layer. As a marker () is detected, based on the marker signal, a positional coordinate (e.g., relative angular position) is determinable based on the current scan position of the transparent opening(s).

To further distinguish between different keys, each key may be made active according to a scanning or timesharing process. In this process, when a particular key is active, the neighboring keys are inactive. The scanning/timesharing process may be performed during a touchscreen mode of operation, which is interleaved with a normal display mode.
