Systems and methods for dynamically optimizing the fidelity of a speech signal received from a wireless telephony device and transmitted through a packet-switched network. In an exemplary embodiment, at least one Quality of Speech (QoS) transmission characteristic is determined for a packet-switched network intermediate to the a first Media Gateway (MGW) and a second MGW; the fidelity of speech transmitted through the packet-switched network being a function of the QoS transmission characteristic. A speech codec is dynamically-selected as a function of the QoS transmission characteristic of the packet-switched network. The speech signal is encoded into speech data using the dynamically-selected speech codec, and transmitted through the packet-switched network from the first MGW to the second MGW. The second MGW decodes the speech data using the dynamically-selected speech codec.

A communications system ( ) and method ( ) of serving subscribers having an originating network ( ) in communication with a terminating network ( ) via a core network ( ). The core network ( ) includes a plurality of external gateways ( ) each adapted to route calls therebetween, with each gateway ( ) having at least one codec ( ). The communications system ( ) includes a network node ( ) for processing call requests from the subscribers having a particular codec type, wherein available gateways ( ) are ranked based on gateway codec availability, the core network ( ) being adapted to route a call as a function of the ranking. The method includes the steps of the subscriber sending a call request and the subscriber's codec type to a first node ( ) within the core network ( ), the first node ( ) selecting one of several external gateways ( ) in the core network as a function of the codecs ( ) determined to be available at the various gateways. The first node ( ) may consult a second node ( ) within the core network ( ) for information indicative of available gateways in the core network ( ).

Routing in an IP network based on codec availability and subscriber preference

A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for decreasing the average call setup time in a cellular network by using an Internet Protocol based cellular network. Call information (such as routing information, channel types, etc.) for a particular call initiated by a calling Mobile Station (MS) can be stored in a call cache within a serving Mobile Switching Center (MSC) to immediately allow the same call to be re-established without tying-up circuits. A call cache identifier (CCI) is assigned to that call cache and passed to the calling MS. When the MSC receives a call from the calling MS, the MSC determines whether a CCI is included with the call. If not, call setup proceeds as normal, and the MSC creates a call cache for the call, assigns a CCI to the call cache and returns the CCI to the calling MS. If a CCI is received with the call, the MSC accesses the call cache associated with the received CCI, and uses the call setup information stored in the call cache to re-establish the call.
