A method determines a weather area for a motor vehicle, with which a sensor system and a communications interface are associated, which are coupled to one another via signals. The method includes: receiving data including geographical information in the form of a map; and creating a grid by dividing the received data into a plurality of adjacent grid cells. The method also includes: providing a measurement signal of the sensor system, representing a location-related local weather situation in one of the grid cells; and determining a local weather area for the respective grid cell according to the provided measurement signal.

A process is provided for operating a route acquisition system, configured for determining route data during movement of the route acquisition system along preset routes, and for storing the latter as electronic routes in the data memory. A preset selection of routes is determined as a function of the stored electronic routes. Traffic signal information is estimated based on positioning system data obtained from a plurality of vehicles. Each data set includes the position and the velocity of a vehicle as functions of time. For an intersection having a traffic signal, an average acceleration of the vehicles when leaving the intersection is estimated, and an average deceleration of the vehicles when approaching the intersection is estimated. For each of a subset of the vehicles, a stop duration at the intersection is estimated based on the average acceleration, the average deceleration, and the positioning system data for the respective vehicle. A duration of a red phase of the traffic signal is estimated based on the stop duration of each of the subset of the vehicles.

Systems and methods for estimating traffic signal information

Systems and methods for estimating traffic signal information are provided. According to one aspect, positioning system data is obtained from a plurality of vehicles. Each data set includes the position and the velocity of a vehicle as functions of time. For an intersection having a traffic signal, an average acceleration of the vehicles when leaving the intersection is estimated, and an average deceleration of the vehicles when approaching the intersection is estimated. For each of a subset of the vehicles, a stop duration at the intersection is estimated based on the average acceleration, the average deceleration, and the positioning system data for the respective vehicle. A duration of a red phase of the traffic signal is estimated based on the stop duration of each of the subset of the vehicles.

Georeferenced predictive information is provided by a backend server system to vehicles. Such provided predictive information may be specifically relevant to a provided planned or estimated route of the particular vehicle, and may be used by the vehicle to reconstruct a digital map specific to such planned or estimated route.

System and method for providing georeferenced predictive information to motor vehicles

Systems and methods for predicting traffic signal information are provided. An exemplary method includes obtaining data from a plurality of types of sources and analyzing the data to predict states of a plurality of traffic signals. The data include crowdsourced data. The predictive traffic signal information may be used to adjust an operation of an on-board system of a vehicle.
