An internal combustion engine, in particular a gas Otto-cycle engine, is provided. The internal combustion engine comprises a plurality of cylinders. Each cylinder is provided with a pre-chamber, and a pre-chamber gas supply conduit through which the pre-chamber can be supplied with fuel gas. The fuel gas is supplied to the pre-chambers by way of a pre-chamber gas valve associated with the respective pre-chamber. Also, an aperture is arranged between the pre-chamber gas supply conduit and the pre-chamber gas valve. At least one aperture associated with a pre-chamber gas valve has a through-flow coefficient such that pressure occurring at a maximum between combustion cycles in a volume between the pre-chamber gas valve and the aperture does not reach a pressure prevailing in the pre-chamber gas supply conduit.

Internal combustion engine

The invention relates to a reciprocating piston engine, comprising at least one main combustion chamber, which is formed between a piston and a cylinder and which is connected by means of a riser to a pre-chamber having a pre-chamber axis, so that gas-air mixture pushed from the main combustion chamber into the riser by the piston forms a rising flow in the pre-chamber, wherein a gas supply channel separate from the riser opens into the prechamber, and wherein the riser and the gas supply channel are oriented with respect to each other in such a way that gas fed into the pre-chamber by means of the gas supply channel hits the rising flow substantially head-on, wherein the riser runs at an angle from the pre-chamber axis.

Reciprocating piston engine

The invention relates to a direct-injection internal combustion engine that is operated in a first operating range associated with the low part load, with largely homogeneous combustion of the mixture and subsequent injection. Said internal combustion engine is operated in a second operating range associated with the middle part load, with low-temperature combustion of the mixture. In this way, minimum nitrogen oxide and soot emissions and a high degree of efficiency can be achieved both in the lower part load region and up to the full load region.

Method for operating an internal combustion engine

A method for operating a direct injection diesel engine which is operated in a first operating region corresponding to low to medium partial load in such a way that fuel combustion takes place at a local temperature below the temperature of NOformation and with a local air ratio above the limit value for soot formation, and where fuel injection starts in a range of between 50&#xb0; to 5&#xb0; crank angle before top dead center of the compression phase and where exhaust gas is recirculated at an exhaust gas recirculation rate of 50% to 70%. In order to achieve high efficiency in each operating region while keeping NOand particulate emissions low, in a second operating region corresponding to medium partial load, fuel injection is started in a range from approximately 2&#xb0; crank angle before top dead center to approximately 20&#xb0; crank angle after top dead center.
