A downhole motor, having a body having an outside surface and a longitudinal extent, a first flow passage defined within the body and disposed along the longitudinal extent of the body, and a second flow passage extending from the first flow passage to a channel at the outside surface, wherein a Bernoulli suction force is created at the channel. A method for drilling a borehole, including directing a fluid through a first flow passage defined within a body of a drill and disposed along the longitudinal extent of the body, directing a portion of the fluid from the first flow passage through a second flow passage to a channel at an outside surface to create a Bernoulli suction force at the channel, and drilling a curved section of the borehole by using the Bernoulli suction force at the channel.

A bending stiffness control system in a downhole drilling assembly includes a body configured to be connected to a downhole component of the downhole drilling assembly, the body having a longitudinal axis. The bending stiffness control system also includes a cavity disposed within the body and extending along the longitudinal axis, and a moveable element assembly including one or more moveable elements that are configured to move along the longitudinal axis, the moveable element assembly configured to control a bending stiffness of the body by reacting to a change in an inclination of the body and the longitudinal axis.

An embodiment of a coupling device is configured to be disposed in a borehole string in a borehole in a subterranean region. The coupling device includes a coupler body having a longitudinal axis, the coupler body including an elongated shaft extending along the longitudinal axis and configured to carry loads through the coupling device, a stiffness control device connected to the elongated shaft, the stiffness control device configured to adjust a bending stiffness of the coupler body, and an actuator configured to cause the stiffness control device to adjust the bending stiffness of the coupler body.

An apparatus for determining a location of an inner string in an outer string includes an axis parallel to a longitudinal axis of the inner string, and a tagging assembly disposed at a tagging location in the outer string, the outer string configured to be deployed into a borehole in a subterranean region, the inner string configured to be advanced through the outer string. The tagging assembly includes a stop component configured to obstruct axial movement of the inner string through the outer string at the tagging location, the stop component configured to be displaced in response to an axial force applied to the stop component by the inner string, to permit the inner string to advance axially beyond the tagging assembly.

A control valve assembly includes a body having a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet. A portion of the body is formed from a first magnetic material. A sleeve is slidingly mounted to the body. At least a portion of the sleeve is formed from a second magnetic material. A magnetic circuit having a gap is defined within the control valve assembly. A solenoid is mounted to the body about at least a portion of the first magnetic material of the body. The solenoid is selectively activated to create a magnetic field across the gap in the magnetic circuit. The magnetic circuit causes the sleeve to slide, narrowing the gap and sliding from the first position to the second position to produce a pressure pulse in the wellbore, wherein the biasing member biases the sleeve back to the first position.

The apparatus includes a drilling system including a drill tubular, a disintegrating device, and a steering system coupled to the drill tubular configured to steer the drilling system, the drilling system configured to drill the borehole by receiving control outputs from at least one control unit for controlling parameters of the drilling system, the at least one control unit configured to provide the control outputs to the steering system, the at least one control unit being configured to provide a depth-based control output.

Methods, systems, devices, and products for downhole operations. Embodiments include downhole tools comprising an outer member configured for conveyance in the borehole; a pressure barrel positioned inside the outer member; a substantially cylindrical pod positioned inside the pressure barrel; and at least one downhole electronic component mounted between the exterior surface and the frame. The pod comprises at least one rigid outer surface forming an exterior surface of the pod and supported by a central frame extending across a diameter of the pod, such as a plurality of outer rigid surfaces. The pod may include a plurality of coupled rigid elongated semicircular metallic shells, wherein each shell of the plurality comprises a rigid outer surface of the plurality of outer rigid surfaces. Each of the at least one downhole electronic component may be sealingly enclosed within a corresponding shell.

A combined telemetry system that can be used while drilling a wellbore consists of a multi-hop telemetry method and a single-hop telemetry method combined in parallel. The multi-hop and single-hop methods can be operated in parallel, for example, so that each telemetry method caries data concurrently from the Measuring-While-Drilling tool located in the Bottom-Hole-Assembly. The multi-hop and single-hop methods can also be operated in series, for example, so that data from the Measuring-While-Drilling tool located in the Bottom-Hole-Assembly are first carried with the single-hop telemetry method and then transferred to the multi-hop telemetry method at one or more node(s) close to the surface. Preferably, the multi-hop telemetry method can also carry data from along-string sensors. Another combined telemetry system that can be used while drilling a wellbore consists of two single-hop telemetry methods combined in parallel.

An apparatus for drilling a directional wellbore is disclosed that in one non-limiting embodiment includes a drive for rotating a drill bit, a deflection device that enables a lower section of the drilling assembly to tilt about a member of the deflection device within a selected plane when the drilling assembly is substantially rotationally stationary to allow drilling of a curved section of the wellbore when the drill bit is rotated by the drive and wherein the tilt is reduced when the drilling assembly is rotated to allow drilling of a straighter section of the wellbore, and a tilt sensor that provides measurements relating to tilt of the lower section. A controller determines a parameter of interest relating to the tilt for controlling drilling of the directional wellbore.

Drilling apparatus using a sealed self-adjusting deflection device for drilling directional wells

A system for acquiring directional information about a geologic formation includes at least one directionally sensitive nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) assembly disposed at a borehole string including the downhole component. The at least one NMR assembly includes at least one magnet configured to generate a static magnetic field and at least one coil configured to generate an oscillating magnetic field, the at least one NMR assembly configured to perform an NMR measurement of at least one sector of a formation region. The system also includes a processing device configured to receive NMR measurement data from the at least one NMR assembly. The processing device is configured to analyze the NMR measurement data to estimate a parameter of the sector, determine a direction of the downhole component based on the estimated parameter; and steer the downhole component according to the determined direction.

A flow-off telemetry system and method of communicating information from a downhole location in a borehole to a surface location while fluid circulation is off. A string is conveyed in the wellbore to define an inner bore and an annulus. During a flow-off condition, an inner bore sealing element closes the inner bore to create a first standing column of fluid in the inner bore, and an annulus sealing element closes the annulus to form a second standing column of fluid in the annulus. A bypass valve in the string at a downhole location between the first standing column of fluid and the second standing column of fluid is activated to generate a pressure pulse including information for performing an action. The pressure pulse is received at a pressure sensor at the surface location and a controller performs an action in response to the information in the pressure pulse.

System and method for surface to downhole communication without flow

A seal assembly for downhole use that includes a sealing ring, and a backup ring set generally coaxial with and adjacent to the sealing ring. A height of the backup ring exceeds a diameter of the sealing ring; and is disposed on a low pressure side of the seal assembly to prevent the sealing ring from extruding into the low pressure side. The backup ring is made of a core and a coating on the core. Material properties of the coating are generally unaffected when exposed to downhole conditions, and the coating prevents diffusion of fluid or gas molecules into the low pressure side.
