A method is provided for transmitting data from a sender to a number of receivers. Also provided are an emitting and/or receiving unit and a communication system. The present invention seeks to provide a method, an emitting and/or receiving unit and a communication system for the efficient, resource saving and energy saving transmission of data to a group of receivers of a point-to-multipoint service. To this end, a point-to-multipoint service is carried out as an extension of a broadcast service CBS in a multi-layer protocol system, providing a multimedia transmission and/or a multicast service, preferably in the form of a multimedia broadcast/multicast service MBMS, during the distribution and/or planning of the use of system resources and the use of a discontinuous reception DRX.

Method for transmitting data from an emitter to a plurality of receivers

A method is provided for transmitting user data messages from a network element of a radio communication system via at least one transmission channel to at least one subscriber terminal of the radio communication system, whereby the form of the user data messages is announced before the transmission thereof via planning information. The planning information includes a first planning message by which the transmission of the user data messages is announced via a first separate transmission channel, and a second planning message by which description information is transmitted via at least one second transmission channel, the description information indicating the form of the user data messages to be transmitted. The form of the user data messages to be transmitted can include the data type and/or the codification of the user data messages. Announcing the form of the user data messages in the planning information enables the subscriber terminal to only intercept or receive the user data messages that it can actually process, thus enabling energy to be saved during reception and processing.

In a third generation (UMTS) mobile radiotelephone system, data are transmitted between a base station and a mobile station in packet form via the air interface. A connection control protocol with the task of, inter alia, establishing whether and which of the data packets have been lost during the transmission, using control data, functions in both stations. These control data are added to each packet that is sent by the connection control protocol. Several packets can be transmitted within the transmission interval and the number of packets can vary from interval to interval. This allows different data transmission rates. The inventive method enables the number of packets that are sent via the air interface to be reduced, by transmitting larger, rather than more, packets within a predetermined interval, while not affecting the possibility of varying the data transmission rate.

Data packets are transmitted via a radio interface, wherein a control unit of a first entity transmits information via its logical channels serving as service access points in the form of a configuration message, with the configuration message including information about which logical channels are to be mapped onto which transport channels serving as service access points for a bit transmission layer. A set of transport formats are predetermined for each of the transport channels along with a set of permitted combinations of transport formats for all transport channels. Each transport format includes a set of parameters determining transmission characteristics of the transport channel configured with the corresponding transport format.
