An apparatus for continuously treating metal strip of aluminum, an aluminum alloy, a nonferrous metal, or a nonferrous-metal alloy, has at least one heat-treatment device through which the metal strip passes in a strip-travel plane in a travel direction without contact from an upstream inlet end to a downstream outlet end and having a heating zone at the upstream end and a cooling zone formed by a row extending in the direction of at least two cooling subzones. A strip-centering device between the cooling subzones adjusts a position of the metal strip in the strip-travel plane and transverse thereto.

Method and apparatus for continuously treating metal strip

An apparatus for leveling thin metal strip moving longitudinally generally in a plane in a travel direction has at least one upstream roll rotatable about an axis and engaging the strip, at least one downstream roll rotatable about an axis and engaging the strip downstream of the upstream roll, and a drive connected to at least one of the rolls for exerting tension on the strip between the rolls. In accordance with the invention pivoting one of the rolls is pivoted about an axis substantially perpendicular to the plane or parallel to the direction so as to vary the tension in the strip across a width of the strip and thereby locally plastically deform the strip to level it.

System for leveling metal strip

A tensioned metal strip over an apparatus for measuring tension that only has a roller rotatable about an axis transverse to the direction and having a substantially cylindrical outer surface engaged generally tangentially by the strip, a radially shiftable tension-measuring bar set in the roller, extending generally only angularly of the axis so as to lie in a plane substantially perpendicular to the axis, and having an outer surface generally flush with the roller surface. Sensors between the bar and the roller for measuring radial deflection of the bar. The apparatus, when used to determine planarity, further has a planarity-measuring bar also set in the roller, extending at an acute angle to and across a respective plane perpendicular to the axis, and having an outer surface generally flush with the roller outer surface. Other sensors between the planarity-measuring and the roller measure radial deflection of the planarity-measuring bar.

Method of and apparatus for measuring strip planarity

A method of splicing a trailing end of a downstream metal strip to the leading end of an upstream metal strip. The method has the steps of overlapping the leading end of the upstream strip with the trailing end of the downstream strip, and thereafter friction welding the overlapping ends together at a plurality of spots at which respective spot welds are thereby formed.

Method of and apparatus for splicing metal strips

A metal strip is stretched as it is moved longitudinally generally continuously between an upstream traction-roll set and a downstream traction-roll set. The roll sets are differentially driven&#x2014;with the downstream set moving at a slightly higher peripheral speed than the upstream set&#x2014;so as to apply to the strip in a region between the sets a tension generally equal to a stretch limit of the strip. The strip is locally heated or cooled at an upstream location in the region between the roll sets so as to set in the strip in the region a temperature distribution that is nonhomogeneous transversely across the strip at least immediately downstream of the upstream location.

Stretch-leveling metal strip

Sensors of the longitudinal edges and/or the width of hot roll metal strip are located immediately ahead of the trimming blades and are used to transversely adjust the trimming heads and/or the centerline position for the strip so that in subsequent trimming operations, the trim widths are identical at both sides. The cutting heads can be positioned in indentations at junctions between the successive segments of the strip.

Method of trimming strip, especially hot roll metal strip

A walking-beam conveyor has a pair of longitudinally extending, parallel, and transversely spaced fixed support rails, at least one walking beam between and generally parallel to the rails, and at least two lifters underneath the walking beam and operable to raise the walking beam from a return position generally below the rails to a conveying position generally above the rails. In accordance with the invention a first longitudinally extensible hydraulic actuator has opposite longitudinal ends one of which is secured relative to the rails. A second longitudinally extensible hydraulic actuator has opposite longitudinal one of which is secured to the other end of the first actuator and the other of which is secured to the walking beam.

Walking-beam conveyor

A strip coating device for coating of strips, particularly metal strips, has at least one application head for applying coating substances to the strip. The application head has at least one application roller that applies the coating substance to the strip, and having at least one supporting roller disposed on the side of the strip opposite the application head. The application head works on the strip either in a first functional position where the strip is supported by the supporting roller, or, in a second functional position outside of the supporting region of the supporting roller.

Strip coating device

In combination with a cutting apparatus having a pair of blades with edges that are closely juxtaposed relative to an axis with each other and where at least one of the blades is movable along the axis to set between axially confronting faces of the blades at the edges a predetermined gap, a system for measuring the gap has a stationary support, and respective means associated with each of the blades for measuring a distance between the support and the face of the respective blade.
