Disclosed is a method of providing a scenario-based overlay torque request signal in a steer torque manager () during driver-override of an auxiliary steering assistance system () function in a road vehicle () having an EPAS system (). The steer torque manager () has a wheel angle controller () for providing an assistance torque request related signal, and a driver-in-the-loop functionality () for determining driver-override and providing a driver-override related signal. The method comprises receiving signals related to: assistance torque request; driver-override; road vehicle velocity; steering pinion angle; distance to an adjacent lane marker (); and distance to an adjacent potential threat object (), and producing, from the received signals, during ongoing driver-override, a signal representative of a resistance torque request corresponding to one of a finite number of pre-defined scenarios for different signal combinations, and producing the scenario-based steering wheel overlay torque request signal through combining the assistance torque request and the resistance torque request signals.

Method of providing a scenario-based overlay torque request signal in a road vehicle steer torque manager

A method for assisting a driver of a host vehicle in avoiding a collision, the method including: detecting a target in the vicinity of the vehicle; determining that the host vehicle is travelling on a collision course with the target; detecting a set of road markers on a side of the target; detecting a free space on the side of the road markers opposite the target side of the road markers, and when a collision with the target is predicted to occur within a predetermined time period and no driver initiated steering action for avoiding the collision course has been detected, providing a steering guidance to the driver of the host vehicle including altering of a steering wheel angular orientation for momentarily steering the host vehicle towards the road markers to indicate an evasive steering action to the driver.

Method and system for providing a steering guidance to a driver of a host vehicle

A vehicle driver assist arrangement may include an output unit and a vehicle driver attentiveness assessment arrangement. The vehicle driver attentiveness arrangement may include a host vehicle lane position evaluation unit, a steering wheel torque detection unit, a pedal pressure detecting unit, and a processing unit. The processing unit is arranged to assess a level of vehicle driver attentiveness on the basis of a first, a second and a third signal transmitted to the processing unit by the host vehicle lane position evaluation unit, the steering wheel torque detection unit, and the pedal pressure detecting unit. The output unit is arranged to issue an alert in case the assessed level of vehicle driver attentiveness is below a predetermined threshold attentiveness level.
