A cooling system for a vehicle includes a processing device configured to determine a coolant system status based on a coolant temperature and determine whether the coolant system status exceeds a coolant system status threshold. The processing device is also configured to determine a thermal load status of at least one electrical component of the vehicle and determine whether the thermal load status exceeds a thermal load status threshold. The processing device is also configured to output a first cooling performance indicator in response, at least in part, to determining that the coolant system status exceeds the coolant system status threshold and that the thermal load status exceeds the thermal load status threshold, the first cooling performance indicator indicating an issue with the cooling system.

A method is provided for operating a cooling system of an internal combustion engine, which cooling system has a controllable rotary slide valve with at least one switched inlet or outlet. The movement of the rotary slide valve into a plurality of switching positions, which each correspond with a cooling system state, is monitored. In accordance with an improper functional state of the rotary slide valve and a current switching position of the rotary slide valve, an operating state of the internal combustion engine is changed to an emergency operation state. A protection system in the cooling system carries out the method and includes a thermal management system, which receives and processes coolant temperatures, and a control unit of a controllable rotary slide valve having a position detector, which can detect a current switching position of the switchable rotary slide valve, wherein the thermal management system is connected to the control unit of the rotary slide valve.

Method for operating a cooling system of an internal combustion engine and protection system in a cooling system

A coolant circuit is provided for an internal combustion engine having a compression machine for intake air. The coolant circuit includes a high-temperature circuit and a low temperature circuit. The high-temperature circuit is provided in order to cool the internal combustion engine by way of a coolant radiator and a first coolant pump arranged in the high-temperature circuit. The low-temperature circuit is provided with a second coolant pump in order to cool the intake air compressed by the compression machine by way of an intercooler and in order to cool a coolant of a coolant circuit in a condenser. The high-temperature circuit and the low-temperature circuit are cooling circuits which are separated from each other. The thermal base load of the low-temperature circuit is reduced by this design, whereby the pressure level in the coolant circuit can be reduced resulting positively in a reduction of the energy consumption.
