A method of providing location services at a location server for a venue includes: receiving a request for location service, where the request for location service comprises at least one of a first identification of at least one mobile device or an identification of a target area; and sending a response, where the response comprises at least one of a second identification of at least one mobile device or an identification of a geographic area, where at least one of the first identification of at least one mobile device, the second identification of at least one mobile device, the identification of the target area, or the identification of the geographic area comprises a venue-specific identification.

Client access to mobile location services

Techniques to support positioning for access points and terminals in WLANs and other wireless networks are described. In one aspect, WLAN positioning is supported with Secure User Plane Location (SUPL). A terminal obtains measurements for an access point in a WLAN and/or receives measurements made by the access point for the terminal. The terminal determines WLAN AP information for the access point and/or the terminal based on the measurements and sends the WLAN AP information to a SUPL Location Platform (SLP). The SLP determines a location estimate for the terminal based on the WLAN AP information. In another aspect, the terminal receives supported network information from the SLP. The terminal obtains network measurement information (e.g., measurements) for a radio access network and determines which particular network measurement information to send based on the supported network information. The terminal sends network measurement information permitted by the supported network information to the SLP.

Positioning for WLANs and other wireless networks

Systems and techniques to determine an approximate location for a mobile device using historic location information. In an aspect, a SUPL Location Platform (SLP), which is a location server in SUPL, may receive data from SUPL Enabled Terminal (SET). The data may include the Multiple Location IDs Parameter. The real time Location ID Parameter may not have a current status. The SLP may determine an approximate position for the SET based on the Multiple Location IDs Parameter data received from the SET. The SLP may then send the approximate position to the SET or a SUPL Agent, or may use the approximate position information in another way.

Method and apparatus for using historic position and network information for determining an approximate position of a mobile device

A method of providing location services at a location server for a venue includes: receiving a request for location service for one or more mobile devices, where the request for location service comprises a trigger condition and at least one of a group condition or a persistence condition; determining the occurrence of the trigger condition and at least one of the group condition or the persistence condition; and sending a response, where the response indicates the occurrence of the trigger condition and at least one of the group condition or the persistence condition.

Protocols for location services are disclosed. For example, a method for a positioning protocol for first and second devices may comprise, at the first device: creating a message for the protocol at the first device, where the message comprises a set of included parameters from a plurality of allowed parameters, encoding the message by embedding each of the included parameters in an encoded string, and transmitting the encoded message to the second device. Similarly, a method for such a positioning protocol may comprise, at a second device receiving a message for the protocol transmitted by the first device, where the message comprises the included parameters, with each included parameter embedded in an encoded string, and decoding the message by decoding a subset of the plurality of included parameters and omitting decoding of included parameters that are not in the subset.

Support of location services using a positioning protocol

Systems and methods for Secure User Plane (SUPL) Redirection and Mobile Location Protocol (MLP) Tunneling to a Discovered SUPL Location Platform (D-SLP) are disclosed. For example, a method for SUPL redirection by a SET, may include: receiving an initiation message at a SET from a Home SUPL Location Platform (H-SLP); establishing a secure connection with the H-SLP, and returning a response message; receiving a redirect message from the H-SLP; establishing a SET initiated SUPL session with a D-SLP; obtaining a location of the SET using the D-SLP; and returning the location to the H-SLP.

Techniques for supporting location services are disclosed. In an aspect, a generic location session between a terminal and a location server may be established for a particular duration or until the generic location session is terminated by a trigger condition. Parameters related to the generic location session may be exchanged between the terminal and the location server during session establishment. Thereafter, the terminal and the location server may engage in one or more positioning activities at any time during the generic location session. Each positioning activity may be of any type supported by the terminal and the location server. The generic location session can be initiated by either the terminal or the location server. In one design, one entity (e.g., the location server) may initiate the generic location session, and the other entity (e.g., the terminal) may send an end message to terminate the generic location session.

Techniques for sending and receiving broadcast information are described. In an aspect, broadcast metadata may be generated for broadcast information and may include location and time criteria used by terminals to filter the broadcast information. Each location and time criterion may include (i) a location criterion given by a target location and a presence or absence requirement and (ii) a time criterion given by a time period in which the location criterion applies. A terminal may receive the broadcast metadata prior to or with the broadcast information, obtain location and time criteria from the broadcast metadata, and filter the broadcast information based on the location and time criteria. The terminal may evaluate each location and time criterion by determining its location within a specified time period and determining whether its location is within or outside a specified target location, as indicated by the presence or absence requirement.

Techniques are provided which may be implemented in various methods, apparatus, and/or articles of manufacture to allow a mobile device to obtain certain location service(s) and/or the like from one or more computing devices that have been authorized for use. For example, in certain implementations, a location server may comprise a proxy location server for an authorizing location server and may indicate one or more other location servers as being authorized for location service related access by a mobile device.

Various methods, apparatuses and articles of manufacture are provided which may be implemented to authenticate the provider of a positioning engine provisioned within a mobile station to enable the positioning engine to obtain and use protected positioning assistance data. In certain examples, a relationship between the provider of a location server and the provider of a positioning engine provisioned within a mobile station may be authenticated, and protected positioning data may be obtained from said positioning engine by said location server.

Methods and apparatuses for protecting positioning related information

Techniques are presented for receiving, at a discovered secure user platform location (SUPL) server (D-SLP) a request from a device for authorization to access a second D-SLP, where the D-SLP provides location services to a first service area comprising a venue or building. The second D-SLP provides location services to a second service area larger than the first service area authenticating information from a Home SLP (H-SLP) received as part of the request to access the second D-SLP. Techniques involve communicating an authorization to access the second D-SLP to the device after authenticating the information from the H-SLP.

A method includes: receiving a request at a Secure User Plane Location (SUPL) Location Platform (SLP) for location-related service; producing a positioning method SUPL message that includes a posmethod parameter that includes a positioning protocol indicator indicating that SET capability transfer and positioning method selection are to be conducted in a positioning protocol layer; and sending the positioning method SUPL message from the SLP to a SUPL Enabled Terminal (SET) using a SUPL User Plane Location Protocol (ULP).

Method and apparatus for transmitting indoor context information

Techniques for supporting periodic and other location services with Secure User Plane Location (SUPL) and other location architectures are described. The techniques can provide position estimates for a SUPL enabled terminal (SET) to a SUPL agent periodically and/or based on trigger events. A Home SUPL Location Platform (H-SLP) receives from the SUPL agent a request for position estimates for the SET. The H-SLP starts a SUPL location session with the SET. For each of at least one reporting event during the location session, the H-SLP obtains a position estimate for the SET and sends the position estimate to the SUPL agent. The position estimate may be derived by the SET and sent to the H-SLP. Alternatively, the position estimate may be derived by the H-SLP based on measurements from the SET.

Location reporting with secure user plane location (SUPL)

Techniques for querying for information on location sessions in a user plane location architecture are described. In an aspect, a location server may send a query message to a terminal to query for information on active location sessions, e.g., when at least one location session for periodic triggered service or area event triggered service is deemed to be active. The terminal may return a response message containing a list of session identifiers (IDs) for the active location sessions, parameters for the active location sessions, capabilities of the terminal, etc. The location server may compare the information received from the terminal and information stored at the location server. The location server may terminate each location session deemed to be active at only the terminal or only the location server. The location server may restart or terminate each location session having inconsistent parameters at the terminal and the location server.
