A method includes the steps of delivering a main combustion air quantity and a main fuel quantity, from which a main mixture is formed, to the combustion chamber; igniting the main mixture formed in an area of a ignition top dead center; and introducing an additional combustion air quantity and an additional fuel quantity into the combustion chamber after the combustion of the main mixture in such a way that a fuel-exhaust gas/air mixture is formed, which mixture is reacted in an area of a gas exchange top dead center of the piston.

Self-igniting internal combustion engine

In an arrangement for reducing exhaust emissions and utilizing the throttling energy of an internal combustion engine, a compressor and a generator are operatively connected to a turbine by which the intake air flow is controlled while transferring the throttling energy recuperated by the turbine to the compressor and the generator and, in the engine start-up phase, the compressor supplies fresh air to an engine air intake duct, the intake air flow volume being controlled by the energy withdrawn from the turbine via the compressor and the generator thus eliminating the need for a throttle valve in the fresh air intake line.

Arrangement for utilizing the throttle energy of an internal combustion engine

In a method for operating an internal combustion engine with direct fuel injection, in which air and a first fuel quantity are fed to a combustion chamber, in such a manner that a homogenous lean base mixture is formed in the combustion chamber, and a second fuel quantity is introduced into the combustion chamber in the region of a top dead center position of the piston, in such a manner that an ignitable mixture cloud is formed within the homogenous lean base mixture in the region of an ignition source, and the mixture cloud formed by the second fuel quantity is ignited by means of the ignition source, so that the lean homogenous base mixture which is present in the combustion chamber is compressed by the combustion of the mixture cloud formed by the second fuel quantity and ignited thereby.

Internal combustion engine with compression ignition

In a method for the operation of a four-stroke reciprocating piston internal combustion engine with alternating compression. ignition and spark ignition, fuel is injected directly, fresh charge is delivered and combustion exhaust gas is led off. At low and medium partial load a partially homogenized, lean basic mixture of air, fuel and retained exhaust gas is formed for the compression ignition, and at higher partial load and at full load a homogeneous, stoichiometric mixture is formed for the spark ignition. Further features include exhaust gas retention, a build-up of exhaust gas and activation injection into the retained exhaust gas. For a smooth transition between the two operating modes, in addition to the co-ordinated interaction of exhaust gas retention, build up of exhaust gas, restriction of the fresh charge, and of the ignition advance angle in spark ignition, together with the quantity and the timing of the fuel injection, use is also made of exhaust gas recirculation.

Method for operating a four-stroke reciprocating internal combustion engine with alternating compression ignition and externally supplied ignition

The invention relates to a four-stroke internal combustion engine with compression ignition and internal exhaust gas recirulation by appropriate actuation of inlet and exhaust valves of at least one cylinder/piston unit. The invention provides for at least one inlet valve and at least one exhaust valve of the cylinder/piston unit to be actuable in such a way that the exhaust valve opening takes place before a charge-exchange top dead center position of a piston between an exhaust stroke and an intake stroke, and the exhaust valve closing takes place after this charge-exchange top dead center position at essentially the same time as the inlet valve opens, in order to displace exhaust gas from a combustion space of the cylinder/piston unit through the open exhaust valve into an exhaust duct and subsequently to suck it back from the exhaust duct into the combustion space.
