A smoking article includes a sheet material including a fibrous layer formed of cellulosic fibres and at least 50% by weight of inorganic filler material having a particle size in range of from 0.1 microns and 50 microns, wherein the sheet material has a tensile strength of at least 900 N/m. The fibrous layer includes a binder material, such as an organic binder material. The organic binder material can be a cellulosic binder material. A coating layer may be provided on at least one side of the fibrous layer.

Ceramics are made of preceramic paper or board structures in a particular shape previously represented in a paper structure, in which the preceramic papers or boards have a content of ceramic fillers between 30 and 95 wt-%, with the ceramic fillers having a particle size &#x3c;30 &#x3bc;m. In order to improve a method for the production of structural ceramics and/or functional ceramics consisting of silicon carbide ceramics, with which a porous precursor body is produced from a cellulose-containing material, the porous precursor body is converted into an open-pored carbon body by means of pyrolysis and the open-pored carbon body is converted into silicon-containing carbide ceramics, in particular, silicon carbide ceramics as a result of infiltration of silicon-containing materials, in such a manner that the structural ceramics and/or functional ceramics as well as the components produced therefrom can be produced with properties which are as reproducible as possible it is suggested that at least cellulose-containing powder be used as starting ingredient for the production of the precursor body.
