Herein are disclosed substituted fullerenes, comprising a fullerene core (Cn), wherein n is an even integer greater than or equal to 60; 3 or 5 dihydrocarbylmalonate (&#x3e;C(COOR)(COOR)) groups bonded to the fullerene core; and 1 or 3 polar extended malonate groups (&#x3e;C(COOR)(COOR)) bonded to the fullerene core. The substituted fullerenes can form micelles, and can be used to ameliorate oxidative stress diseases.
